I'm heading down to Wichitas next week and wondering if camping is allowed in the refuge. If anybody knows how to camp for free in the area I'd love to hear it. Thanks

Don't even think about pirating a site anywhere within the refuge. There are some serious access issues going on and some of the park rangers/cops are not fond of climbers...so please pay if you stay within the refuge. You can camp out by the lake ( off the refuge - I think it is called lake latonka) and even then it is a pay area. Just pay for a site at the refuge. You won't regret it. Great camping and closer to the amazing climbing.

Great, thanks for the heads up. We'll be getting in on Sunday so we'll have to car camp for the first night but we'll get a permit for the rest of the week.

Camp Doris is where you'll probably end up... Great access down there and the climbs are amazing (Especially considering it's Oklahoma) Prices are very reasonable... especially if you car camp. We might see you there... my partner and I are heading down saturday morning and staying through Sunday. What are you planning on climbing??? Have fun!

we're not sure yet. We'll be getting in on Sunday staying the whole week (oh yeah college spring break) so we may be getting a back country permit for part of the time. But we'll probably be at Doris on Sunday night. We'll probably hit up something easier to find the first day, don't know what exactly since this is our first time there, but we'll be in a silver SUV w/ Nebraska plates so give us a holler if you're around.

I'd call now if you're wanting a backcountry permit at all next week! I found out the hard way that they reserve ahead of time and usually more than a few weeks out... kindof dumb if you ask me. But, everything's still plenty accessible when your at Doris... so long as you don't mind driving a little in between. Well, hope you have a great time! We'll only be there this weekend (fri, sat, sun) cause our spring break doesn't start for another week... but we'll keep our eyes peeled for your Nebraska SUV.
