Planning to go to Mexico during spring break and have booked at Club Med for 5 days but was hopping to get out of the resort for some climbing. Is there any climbing in the Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo area? I was hopeing to bring my gear and do some climbing in the area, I see that Club Med has a small (I mean SMALL) wall for the youngsters but there are no routes and it is all only vertical. From what i can see there a plenty of cliffs along the coast but they all look unclimbable for trad, sport or top rope and i'm assuming they are not bolted. I'm currently climbing 5.10-5.11. I would rather sport or top rope but i will bring my rack either way. Are there are crags within reach of Ixtapa? Any other suggestions for things to do while im there? Thanks,

I don't recall seeing anything of interest there, and my overall impression is that unless you're within a few hundred feet of the water you'll have absolutely zero interest in pulling down on anything, anyway. The heat/humidity are fairly suffocating. Take up drinking tequila instead. I'll add some beach info for you. While Isla Ixtapa is nice, I'd recommend going into Zihua. Zihua is where the real town is. Playa la Ropa in town is nice, good place for evening dinner. Take the boat over to Playa los Gatos for snorkeling. Its small and you'll be in vendor lounges with cold drinks. If you want to get away from everyone hire a cab to take you 5 miles south to Playa Blanca. Its pretty deserted, has good wave action and there's a tiny village at the south end with a couple palapa restaurants. Its your best bet in the area. The town beach in Zihua, can't remember the name, has great body surfing.
