San Rafel Climbing?  (North_America: United_States: Utah: Moab)

Hello there.

I'm a Utah native who has unfortunately been living in New Jersey for a number of years. Anyway...

I'm going to be in Utah and I'd love to do some outdoor climbing. I'm going to be in the San Rafel Swell area and hope to find a partner to climb with.

As a last resort I'll consider hiring a guide, but obviously I'd much rather climb with a partner and save the $ to spend on gear! I can meet up prior at a gym in SLC if youd like to meet and climb at a gym to see each others levels and such.

Please hit me up. Or pass the note along to someone you may know who might be up for climbing.

Thanks so much!

Neil

The San Rafael Swell - eg, "The Swell" - is awesome, and it has a few spectacular routes, pillars, and a great bouldering area (Triassic). That said, most of it is pretty sporty, meaning there routes aren't cleaned, protection can be poor, holds can break, etc. Also, because it's not so well developed, it's not a place where people are going to climb every weekend. I'd say your chances of finding a partner to hit the Swell are slim unless you're specifically wanting to climb in Triassic. You'd have better luck looking for people to climb at Joe's Valley or around Moab.

You might try posting on utahclimbers.com. I doubt a guide service would take you climbing in the Swell.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Is there a good guide book you can recommend for 'The Swell" area?

Nope. It's rather poorly, intentionally perhaps, documented. There's a little bit of stuff in the Falcon Utah Climbing guide, and a little more on mountainproject.com. Seems to be mostly a combination of either 5.11 - 5.12 cracks or radically run-out 5.8-9 slabs, with a random smattering of more moderate grades.

yogaboy, don't take this as harsh, I'm trying to be realistic, but given your climbing record posted in your profile, I don't think the swell is the place to be climbing. even the easy routes there have a serious wilderness factor to them that can make them seem several grades harder.

the bouldering is fabulous though and is near the main campground. there are also great canyons if you're into canyoneering.
