I am thinking of relocating from NJ somewhere West. A friend of mine suggested that I take a couple of months off and drive across the country, look at places where I might want to settle and climb. I am looking for ideas for good towns to live in and climbing areas. requirements for towns: --has to be big enough so that I can find a job. I work in IT (computers) --access to climbing and other outdoorsy stuff --liberal --I am coming from a very impersonal nj suburb and am looking for a sense of community, outdoorsy and laid back people Climbing: I am not a very experienced climber and I'd really like to get better by spending good amount of time at different areas where I can learn different skills. Most of my experience has been in the Gunks, NY. I follow 5.9 - 5.10 and lead 5.6 trad. Where should I go? How hard will it be to find partners considering my inexperience and what is the best way to go about it? I am thinking of doing this sometime next year, but not sure what time is best in terms of climbing. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you have an expansive definition of the term 'climbing' (e.g. you count cragging, alpine rock, snow and ice as climbing) and enjoy skiing, then Seattle would be a good choice. 1. Liberal 2. Lots of IT jobs 3. A decent sense of community for a city The cost of living is a little high, but you're gonna get that in any liberal city that is a desirable locale.

Try Albuquerque, NM. Though to really have a sense of community there you generally have to have been born into a large family from that area.

Austin, Tx. Year round climbing with pretty good sport inside the city and just a 20-30 min drive to really good limestone at Reimers Ranch. And about 1:20 to good granite trad at E-Rock. Liberal. Great community. Lots of job opportunities.

Thanks everyone, but finding a job anywhere is proving to be much harder than I originally expected. Oh, by the way, does anyone (who lives in any of the places mentioned above) need a java developer?:)
