Panamint City is a mining ghost town just west of the Death Valley park border in the Panamint Range. Matt and I trekked up to Panamint City with climbing gear. From my previous visit to Panmint City I had my mind set on trying to climb the rock towers between Panamint City and the ridgeline to the north east. On Thursday March 26th, with heavy gear laden packs, we hiked the 5.6 miles into the Panamint city in just 3 hours. We then hiked another 1.6 miles to the base of what we have decided to call Sym Tower. We discovered extremely high quality granite and numerous climbable cracks. We found a nice crack on the left side of Sym Tower, stashed our heavy gear and descended for the night. The next day we hiked back up to Sym Tower and made the 3 pitch climb we have named Wonderbelt, a 3 pitch traditional 5.8 route. Once at the top we rappelled off the north side of Sym Tower in two sections, each via a stout tree offering an easy rope pull which allowed us to leave not one piece of gear on the route. We believe this to be the First Ascent of this route and possibly the first ascent of the entire area that we now call Panamint Towers. This is also my first FA of which I am very proud. OutSTANDING! I just drove up Panamint valley, this past Saturday. I too found some nice rock bro! Its in the Armagosa, its compact limestone and there is lots of it. Too bad its at the end of a 5 mile 4wd track, followed by a 500' descent and climb back out the other side of a wash and then 3 miles up another wash, and about 1000 feet up a slope from the bottom. It would make excellent sport climbing otherwise hehe. Congrats again DMT

There was a sort of pancake section looking slab on the first pitch but we decided pancake was too fruity for a real route name. Wonderbelt just came to me as we were hiking out. It sounds kinda funny and doesn't make much sense and its short. That's all. Thanks for the props.

Honestly, this is probably the best post I have seen on rc.com on a long while. A short description by someone totally stoked about their accomplishment along with some fantastic pictures. Perhaps if there was more insulting of 'majid' this post would get more interest. Again, nice job on the send.

Snowey : I have created a page for the area with the one route we did. No real topo but the photo should suffice. I checked out pullharder.org and you guys are some burly dudes. Maybe you'd like to come out to Panamint Towers and bag some FA's yourself. I definately need some help since Matt is from Oklahoma and long gone now. BTW who is majid ? Is he the resident grumpy troll on rc.com or something ?

Yo dubhouse I posted a link to your thread over at the Taco. It generated some interest. John Bachar was psyched about your FA dude. Thought you might like to get some additional feedback (and other possibilities....) Check it out http://www.supertopo.com/...c_id=822664&tn=0
