My name is Owen and in August I'm moving to Leadville because I'm going to Colorado Mountain College. I was wondering where the closest bouldering and sport climbing is in the area. Thanks!

not sure, but when you get there, check, in with George Gipson (fromerly mtngeo on RC) of xanadu expeditions.

My inlaws have a cabin in Leadville. It's been a couple of years since we visited there, but I love that place! If Lake County paid their teachers decently, we'd have moved there long ago.
That said, I've only bouldered once at the Kluttergarden (off Hwy 24? near Red Cliff). I'm not familiar with specifics, but I believe there is a lot of rock to be found in the vicinity. Check out http://www.buenavistaclimbing.com to start.

Independence Pass has a lot of sport and some trad and bouldering. It's your closest bet.
Do yourself a favor and move there in the summer. I've got a feeling that place sux like suck has never sucked in the winter.

There are a few of us in the area, in my case down valley 30 miles, and we can steer you to some decent rock. Though as ANGRY so eloquently put it August is not the best time to be arriving. My wife is in the Admin office on campus so when you go in to pay your tuition you will likely run into her, Holly.

I live in Germany right now so I ski tour the backcountry all year round in the Swiss and Austrian alps. When the snow stops we just go higher! I think I'll fit in just fine telemarking in Colorado but I've never tried ice climbing before so that could be fun. Thanks for all the tips of where to go from everyone. Independence pass seems like the most talked about place to climb near leadville by far and the link asuphil sent is really helpful too.

Some more ideas of "things to do"-
The Arkansas river is just down the road- a very very fun river, if you are into kayaking
If you want a fun intro to the mountains around there, i would drive a little bit south to the Collegiates and do the rad ridge b/w mt harvard and mt columbia. a really fun moderately-long day! Harvard is the 3rd highest peak in CO, and this is one of the longest "14er traverses" in the state....

...and Ellingwood Ridge on La Plata Peak (Colorado's 5th highest and not far from Leadville.

I will be in Ski Resort Operations this fall. I can't wait! Should be a pretty nice place to go to college. 20 minutes to Copper and tons of backcountry right next to the campus, sounds good to me!
