I was playing around with rear curtain sync at the gym. Kind of a nice effect. Shot this at 1/45. I figured the eyes were the most important to have in focus so I had Johnathan hang from the dyno hold while i locked focus on his eye manually. Then he dynoed a bunch of times while I put the camera on motordrive and fired away. Using a higher ISO, the flash didnt have to put out much power so it could keep up with the drive.

The image and the composition are are great. You caught him at just the right moment in this frame, right before he touches, giving it a really good sense of action.
My only issue is that your ambient (fluorescent?) is coming into play so much that you have a fairly prominent yellow shift. If you adjust that and strengthen the black just a touch then I think it'd pop even more.

Really well done shot. I like it a lot. The colors are great and I love the focus eye and everything else just feels like its moving.
On camera flash or did you have it set up somewhere off camera on a remote?

Kriso and Jason,
Thanks for your comments. Jason, The flash was on-camera this time. One thing I did that was a little different was that I zoomed out as he jumped toward me. This doesn't show up much in the non-flash lit areas as I expected, but I think it really sharpened his face up as his face didn't change much in size as he moved closer to me during the slow shutter speed. Normally I would see some motion blur in the face and chest with a sharp area in the face from the flash. I'll have to experiment with this some more.

That totally explains the odd feeling I was getting- the WALL seemed as if it is moving in relation to the CLIMBER. Needless to say, this is a little backwards from what you would expect!
