Hi all, I am thinking of going to seneca sometime in june. I wonder how hot it gets - is june/july too late in the season? How is the weather in seneca in summer? Thanks....

It can get very hot, but it's manageable. Hit the west face early in the morning. Take a nice lunch and hydrate around noon. Then, climb on the east face into the evening. Bring lots of water and sunblock. The worst I've been burned at Seneca was climbing the nice and cool Thai's Direct on the west face one morning, then getting stuck in the sun while belaying a hang dogging second from the summit. Also, there will almost always be some kind of rain in the forecast for Seneca, but most often it misses the crags. Or it'll shed a couple drops and it'll be fine the rest of the day. Don't get faked out.

What zealotnoob said. It gets hot but you can chase the shade and there is always the swimming hole with a beer if desired. I have been miserable in an exceptionaly hot july though.

Thanks for the replies. Is june considerably better than july, or not much of a difference? (Maybe I have to take a long weekend in may.... )

Go as early as you can and you'll probably want to come back. You won't have a better adventure at any other crag east of the Mississippi.

June is better than July for sure, on average, but as has been said, you can chase the shade. May would be more ideal, provided it doesn't rain the whole weekend. Have fun, enjoy the thighmaster, and don't leave until you've climbed Soler and Triple S.

The stairmaster is just the trail up to the stuff on the west face. It's really not too bad, but you should probably not tell your partner about it, and then give him/her all the heavy gear to hump up. In the picture below, you'll start way down to the right and hike up. Thais Corner is in the prominent left-facing dihedral you see towards the left, and Pleasant O is just to the left of that and angles up under the big roof - Both start back in the alcove you see just above the tree line. If you wander up that way, you'll see Pleasant O and immediately want to climb it...

Thanks.... to answer your question...it is WV. plan for hot days and cool nights or the opposite if it is overcast...wet gear and good climbing bras will get you through...bug spray and sunscreen, and an extra rope, never hurts. slimmy and hot! lots of chalk and clean up after yourself and others....
