Hi - I'm going to my wife's family's reunion this summer (august) at the outer banks. I'd like to sneak off for a day or two and check out NC climbing. Any hints as to places I shouldn't miss? Is it going to be too hot to climb? Also, I'll be solo, anybody care to show me around? Thanks!

The Outer Banks are a good ways from any climbing. You're looking at least 6 hrs. The good news is that if you are willing to make the drive to Western NC you have tons of options, mostly trad, but great bouldering and some sport as well. NC is the best state on the East for multi pitch climbing. Check out Ship Rock near Boone, NC for cool temps or the North Face of Looking Glass. Moore's Wall can also be decent but it's lower in elevation and could be sweltering even in the shade. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

I would agree ^^. Far drive from Outer Banks. Anywhere in Boone would be good, including Linville Gorge. They have lots of boulders in the wilderness since you will by yourself. The N. Face of LG is also good, but find a parnter.

Seriously though.... stay away from Stone in August (I think I am the only person stupid enough for that) Moore's Wall (In the Hanging Rock State Park) would be your closest option I think, but it is not close. I'd plan at least 2 days to make the drive worth it. Stone Mtn is close, but it would be toasty.

Thanks for the Beta. I'm not much of a boulderer, Looking Glass looks pretty cool. Anybody want to assay a top 10 in the shade ticklist? Me and the sun don't really get along. I'll probably only want to get on stuff up to 5.11, depending on the sand-baggage.

North Face of Looking Glass should be good. I have not done too much there, what I have done has been fun. P1 of "Invisible Airwaves" and "Creatures of Waste" and "The Womb" should fit your requirements. "Cornflake Crack" and "the Seal" look good as well, but I have not been on them. Shiprock (near Boone) might be a good choice as well...

You definitely need to head west for good NC climbing. You may want to kick back and enjoy the beach and plan a climbing trip to (western) NC another time. Come in Looking Glass Outfitters outside of Brevard for all the Beta you could need!

If you aren't into the sun... August in NC may not be your favorite place.

Nags head to moores wall/pilot mnt. area is about 325 miles and five hours. There is some bouldering a bit closer. 6-7 hours to linville gorge.

This is the extent of the climbing we found in the outer banks. Kitty Hawk Kites(Both indoor and outdoor autobelays) and the Corolla light house(nice little bridge). Not good for adults but a lot of fun for the kids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW560vs-Wuw

pilot mountain or saura town or however it is you spell it are going to be your closest options. saura town(?) has a heck of an in hike and the directions posted here arent right if i remember correctly. should be about 5 hours drive pending on how fast you drive. i used to live about 1.5 hours west of there and it took me about 2.5 to 3 hrs to get to pilot.

Sauratown is CLOSED. Access has been verboten for almost 2 years now. CCC is working on it. Unless and until they get access restored divert to Pilot, Moore's, or Cook's.

That was for the benefit of anyone in the area who either hadn't heard of the crag or wasn't aware of the access issues. edited for cheesetits.

Might be a shorter run to Richmond and the Manchester Wall - not been myself, but looks like less than 4 hours depending on where in the OBX you are.

outer banks? two days? rent a sailboat or a surfboard, perhaps go fishing. a drive down to ocracoke would be a nice adventure as well. if you only have two days, enjoy the outer banks, don't bother with the climbing, it'll take you a days driving to and fro.
