McDowell Rock Climbing Plan Approved by Scottsdale Commission.

During City meetings of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission in March and April the rock climbing plan for the North Access Area was approved. This capped a long and cooperative dialog between the City staff, the Preserve Commission members, and representatives of the rock climbing community. All of the historic rock climbing crags at the North end of the McDowell Mountains were included.

Because the land is part of a City preserve with a primary mission of preserving the land and its ecology, rock climbers worked with the City officials to establish sustainable use expectations. Rock climbers will approach the designated crags on specific climber trails to minimize off trail use, which is prohibited under the Preserve Ordinance. New bolting in new locations will be prohibited to minimize environmental impacts. In addition, climbers will be expected to comply with the Management Plan for the Preserve, which includes no camping, fires, and other practices which the City does not permit.

Because some areas of historic access will change, the City has been working with the rock climbing community to identify and build the appropriate access trails. The rock climbing crags and conceptual climber approach trails are shown on maps available on the Arizona Mountaineering Club’s website. Please see:
http://www.amcaz.org/...ss_Issues/Access.htm
McDowell Mountains - for specifics.

Also, new trailhead locations will be planned and built over the next several years, so climbers will have to adapt to some additional future Preserve improvements and some closures of old approaches, access, and trailheads. Very soon all of the previous and existing climbing guidebooks will be obsolete with regard to at least some of these issues.

Please direct any questions concerning the plan for rock climbing in the McDowell Mountains to Erik Filsinger, AMC Land Advocacy Chair and Rock Climbing Liaison with City of Scottsdale Staff – http://smorefil@aol.com, or Scott Hamilton, the City of Scottsdale Trails Planner – http://shamilton@scottsdaleaz.gov
