So I'm trying to remember which mountain is too holy to fully summit. A diety lives on top and (honorable) mountaineers turn around just feet from the summit.

I want to say it's kangchenjunga but I might be crossing some wires here.

Nanda Devi is closed to climbing, is this a religious or political measure?

You're right Angry, it is kangchenjunga. At least its one of them. Joe Brown and his expedition stop only feet from the true summit.

Cool, that's what I thought.

It's not a question of whether I believe there is a goddess up there, it's just so neat to see the kind of respect some climbers have. It probably takes more strength to turn around right there than to continue up.

If I climb an 8000 meter peak, Kanchenjunga would be the one I'd want to do.

4 rill.

the massif is just majestic. and it has all kinds of cool mythology behind it.

In reply to:
Kangchenjunga translated means "The Five Treasures of Snows", as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 metres, the treasures representing the five repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.
