For those who do not know who Karine Ruby is. She is the most sucessful world cup snowboarder in history male or female. In the just over 200 FIS events she started in, she was on the podium in over 150 of them. She will be missed in the snowboard community.

From what I could gather in the French newspapers, she was guiding two clients on the glacier du Géant, near the Tour Ronde, when the whole party fell into a 20m (65ft) crevasse, around midday, with clear weather. Both Ruby and one of the clients, a 38 year old man, died on the spot or shortly afterwards, despite the quick arrival of a rescue team. The third man, aged 27, was transported by helicopter to Geneva and was in critical condition, but I haven't been able to find more information on how he is doing by now. The glacier du Géant is just outside of the Aiguille du Midi cablecar and crossed hundreds of times every day to get to many of the Chamonix alpine climbs. I have been there a few times myself. I guess it is a good reminder of the inherent dangers of glacier travel, even when roped up.

20m wide crev is the widest span between two people. If three people fell into it, 20m/70ft divided by 3, that would be 6.3 m = 23 ft. I have gone through this section many times. It is kind of a wake up call.

20m is not the width but the depth of the crevasse. Or, to be more precise, the depth which the three of them fell. None of the articles say anything about how wide the crevasse was nor how closely they were roped together. If the two clients were inexperienced, maybe they just didn't know how to arrest at all.
