I'm contemplating a trip down to Kentucky in mid-late december and was wondering if anyone knows about typical weather conditions this late in the season. Would it be feasible to camp or will it be below freezing at night? And daytime temps...will the rock be cold or will it still be warm enough to pull those pockets?

It's kind of a hit or miss thing. Typically, it's colder than hell in December (as expected). Sometimes though, we get some nice weather and it gets all the way up in the 60's. You just have to go to weather.com or wunderground.com, type in Slade and keep track of the 5 day forecast. If it is cold the night before, the rock will be cold most of the day unless it gets a lot of sun. I absolutely hate cold rock, but it's good for the friction. As for camping, you wouldn't catch me sleeping outside this time of year. I don't care how nice the days are, the nights are always too cold for my liking.

Does anyone know how late in the season Miguel's stays open? And if the shop's closed, would he mind people parking in the lot to camp?

You might want to develop a list of sunny routes with open southern exposures. I recall an early spring day a few years ago that started out freezing cold, but when I was on the second pitch of Bedtime for Bonzo, things felt geat!

Any other recommended winter routes?

If anyone knows which crags in the Red get the sun in December - or if you know specific climbs that may be warm, please feel free to list'em.

We're just sport climbers so we're looking for .10-.11's (me) and .12-.13's (partner) that will be warm enough not to freeze off our fingertips.

Thanks in advance!

I will be going to RRG in two days! If we find any "warm spots" I will let you know! Hopefully we won't freeze!

It was our first trip to the RRG and we had a blast! Thanksgiving was a little bit cold for my hands on the rock. Friday warmed up to near 60 degrees (F) and it was wonderful! From what I heard, the weather throughout the winter is hit or miss and has a lot of great warm days! If you are planing on tenting it, I would take a 20* bag (it got pretty cold at night). weather.govwas a pretty accurate forcast. Have fun and good luck!
