Fred was out climbing today at the City of Rocks in Idaho. He was getting ready to hop on a 5.7 at Practice Rock. I guess he did a 5.9 the day before. He is 86 years old and still doing it!

That's because Fred Beckey is a savage beast who eats broken glass for dessert and shits testosterone.

He sure gets around. I saw him in Squamish maybe 3 weeks ago.

Fred and I share a mutual climbing partner... it would surprise most people to sit and actually hold a realistic, deep conversation with him. From what I'm told its not all about climbing and f***ing... I'd be interested to see what he thinks of the picture, but getting that out of him is probably impossible. My buddy is supposed to drag him down south here so I can take him up the Open Book... before he dies. lol.

Ha! I just saw Fred at Index, Washington on May 22nd!! He really does get around. He also made a damn fine attempt at seconding Godzila (stout 5.9) while we were there. He said he had a pretty bad cold or he would have sent . A true inspiration!!

Late July 2007, sitting around Applebee Dome on a rest day in the Bugaboos, Beckey comes walking (slowly but steadily) into camp with a middle-aged father and young son. After about 30 mins of sitting and relaxing from the hike up (I'm guessing from the hut), they cruised over to knock off McTech Arete (5 or 6 pitches, can't remember, 5.10). Just awesome to see.
