My wife and I are considering heading to South Africa for 5 weeks of vacation from the end of July to end of August. We've never been and really don't know what to expect after reading about it in guidebooks and the news. It seems as if it's filled with superlatives...best wine, most beautiful landscapes, most dangerous country... I would love to do some climbing while we're there. Will it be too cold because we'll be there in the middle of winter or will things still be climbable? Can anyone recommend locations, routes or climbing guidebooks? Any non-climbing activities that people recommend as well? What about the safety aspect? We are planning on renting a car and spending most of our time outside of the cities. We plan on either camping or staying in modest hotels. Is South Africa as dangerous as the news makes it sound? Thanks for any advice and info!
