Sorry to ask such a noob question, but... I am taking a group to NRG for an extended trip. We will be camping at one of the primitive sites near Prince (McCreery, Grandview Sandbar, or Glade Creek, depending on which will have room for us). Then we will hike upriver from the Bridge along the Kaymoor, Cunard to Kaymoor, Brooklyn Mine, Brooklyn Red Ash, Brooklyn-Southside Junction trails. Can anyone help me figure out which of the NRG climbing areas (listed on this site as "bridge area crags" - "whipporwill") are near these campsites and along these trail sections? Any other pointers or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are parking at the lot below the bridge to hit the kaymoor to cunard trail, you will come across a turn off trail for Kaymoor mines trail. If you take it uphill back toward the kaymoor parkinglot you'll hit the Kaymoor climbing area. This includes The Hole, Butchers Branch, Rico Suave Butress, 7-11 wall, etc.

Thanks. Are there more climbing areas as we make our way south from Kaymoor? Anything near the Brooklyn - Red Ash trail? Or near Cunard?

What type of climbing are you looking for? Are they clients or friends?

Sorry I didn't give more details. The group is a Boy Scout patrol, about 10 of us total. We are relatively novice climbers, but one of us would be able to lead in order to set up the TR.

Right on. What guiding service are you using.

You guys, of course :-) We are competent enough to hike and climb, but we don't have any local knowlege in this area. We want to spend several days hiking back up the gorge after rafting down it, so we will be starting at the bridge and hiking back south from Kaymoor to Canard, and onward back to Thurmond or so. What we don't really have a good grasp on is what climbing opportunities we'll find along the way. The topo maps make it look like there should be several opportunities, but that's just a guess. I've ordered a guide book (Cater), but haven't recieved it yet. It seems that hikers and climbers describe their information differently, since the hiking trails descriptions are silent about any available climbing and the climbing site descriptions are mostly about vehicle approaches, rather than call out specific trail names. I'm trying to correllate the two. I'm sure the guidebook will help, but I'm fishing for some informed advice here as well. So are there any opportunities for us along the trail from Kaymoor south? The tip about going up the Kaymoor Mines trail to find the Kaymoor region was just the kind of thing I'm looking for.
