Can anyone tell me why bolts are being chopped at Laurel Knob? I know the CCC has some, let's say, "unusual" rules in place about establishing new routes on "their" land. But surely it hasn't come to this extreme; has it? I am talking specifically about a route left of Groover which has had bolts chopped on the pitches above the large tree island. There used to be at least three bolts for the water groove on the second pitch. Somebody removed at least one of them resulting in some serious and dangerous run-outs. It doesn't make any sense. Who is chopping bolts and why? -Adam

If this is true, it sucks. Pirate's Cove is a quality route and I'd hate to come upon the lack of any of the bolts on the route unknowingly.

Wayne Roy applied for and re-equipped the first pitch last year. Pirates Cove is totally legit and also a fine route. I've been a member of the LK new route committee since 06. Bolts have not been removed by the CCC since the first year of the LK climbing management plan. If Pirates Cove's bolts were chopped, it was not done by someone other than the CCC or LK NRC.

Thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I wasn't sure if the CCC considered Pirates Cove "legal" or not. Are you positive that you speak for every member of the route committee when you say that the CCC hasn't removed any bolts since the first year? Somebody is still removing bolts and the CCC has been open in the past about removing what it considers to be "illegally placed" bolts on LK. I am not accusing anyone, but whoever is chopping is making the routes on LK dangerous for climbers.
