There are tons of quality boulders all over this place. It's within 1-1.5 hrs of a major metro area, yet nothing is established? I've read the NPS regulations on climbing there and, although archaic, they do allow it. Does anybody climb at Catoctin Mountain Park???

Well i've been back living around the area for almost 3 yrs now and have decided that, for the most part climbers who live in/around DC prefer not to climb outside. I feel like a kid in a candy shop!!!

Don't kid yourself. You're re-ascending stuff that was put up long ago and forgotten. I never checked it out, but I heard tales of boulders there as early as the late 80s. I'm sure they were being climbed earlier, too, but that's before my time.

Yeah they look to be like...HUNDREDS of years old!! Definetely before the 80's

i've been there before. think there are some state park rules there that say no climbing, but folks do boulder there.

Yes - climbed there in the 70's. Some fun highballs and face climbs. A rather boring quartzite though. Harpers Ferry or shafers rock has much better quality rock.

There are some sweet boulders here. I come up almost once a week and there are definitely some really fun problems. Never have seen another climber here though.

I was just up there camping, scoped it out. Fun boulders in both Catoctin and Cunningham Falls State Park. Saw chalk. Real pretty area.
Catoctin is the part north of 77, climbing policy as you've seen. Cunningham Falls SP is the bit south of 77, official climbing policy in the SP appears to be "discouraged" but allowed.
Also, probably don't go bushwacking near Camp David.

Agreed. The Catoctin Mountain/Cunningham Falls area is an amazing bouldering area. There has been more development lately, but the really amazing problems are off the beaten path so people haven't really found them yet. (consider this a good thing ;) ) If you want to find the good stuff go look for it! otherwise drive to coopers/gretna/stables
