jt, you have such a WAY with words. Jer and Greg, take note!

This is the most entertaining bloodbath, er, thread I have ever read. I have been laughing and laughing.
Reminded me of the "guide" who first asked me for directions to a particular route (quietly, so his "clients" didn't hear), then offered me his card for my future guiding needs...I think we've all had experiences like that.

Why are you writing this? Who is your audience?

Writing for a perceived audience is a huge fault, imo.

When I see a writer characterize readers as 'my readers' I know that all is lost with that person. They have become writing sluts, typing what they think 'their' 'audience' wants to read.

That leads to Serial Bullshit.

It all starts with a writer perceiving an audience. Fuck that.

Write for yourself or STFU.

Jeremiah is in Chicago on a family vacation with his girlfriend, parents, and sister(s), but he and I both decided from the beginning to not allow a repeat of the Brotherhood thread. I personally think that neither of us have said anything in this thread that was remotely as inflamatory as what was said in the Brotherhood thread. In fact, I think we've both been above the fray.

I understand your friend is away, and may not be online much. That said, there's a difference between remaining above the fray and not addressing legitimate questions that have come up.

Is Jeremiah taking clients outdoors as an extension of his gym employment, under an established guide service, or independently? (If it's the later, I wonder what the regulations for instructing/guiding are in RRC and GotG.)

Does Jeremiah recognize a difference between instructing at well-established single-pitch crags and guiding in more challenging environments? What qualifies him to call himself a guide?

Unless he addresses some of these fundamental concerns, I can't see any change in his treatment here. There are certainly issues beyond those, as well.

Dear Happiegrrrl. It is Dude. I take no credit for anything on or linked from that page and it is definitely not to be Taken Seriously (though you probably picked up on that the moment you saw the word Ostrich.) It's like saying I was a member of the Rhino party, whose various political platform promises have included repealing the law of gravity, providing higher education by building taller schools, and counting the Thousand Islands to see if any have been stolen. My own musings remain private and unblagged, in accordance with the wishes of the author. There are no immediate plans for publication, professional or otherwise.

Maybe because he, like a few others, recognizes that Germy's attitude and approach has the distinct possibility of getting someone injured or killed.
I didn't mean Jay, I meant Jeramieah, but I can't spell his name, so I write J-dude.

This thread is chock full of hilarious, and just when I thought the entertainment would fade away, this happened. Nice.

Greg & Jeremiah, I sypathize with what you're trying to do. I read your blog, and I find Greg's posts about struggling with Gunks moderates to be entertaining. I do the same sort of climbing, so I can relate. And I admire Jeremiah for trying to be honest and confessing weaknesses in his climbing and guiding.

So I'm trying to present this as a friend: take down that post about the guiding life. It might get Jeremiah fired. No employer is going to want a guide who writes on the internet about courting danger. Furthermore, if you ever have an accident while guiding and someone decides to sue, you will rue the day you posted that stuff.

That is all.

Sigh....

Here's what I don't understand about the whole deal.

Why the eff would someone want to be a guide? It sure seems like the quickest possible way to hate climbing and everything about climbing.

If you're fortunate enough to not be a guide, count your blessings and go back to your job. Climbing is meant to be enjoyed on your days off.

For me , It's a killer job. I'm nomally done by 1 in the afternoon and can go climbing, rafting, hiking, or slutting around( it's Euro season) the rest of the day and my tips buy my beer and food for the day.

At the risk of catering to the audience:
Hear! Hear!

You have to write what speaks to you. You should write on a consistent level (within a piece).

There are two exceptions to the not considering the audience rule that I can think of:
Children's books.
Scholarly papers (where format and tone is constrained).

Damn. That settles it. I'm quitting my job and becoming a guide. Uh, where do I find these "Euro's"?

Wait a minute! I live in Utah, too! What is this Euro season of which you speak? And where in Utah? I'm guessing Moab or St George 'cause of the rafting reference.
