Curious if anyone here has hiked pikes peak in the winter and could give any insight as to what gear is really required for this trip. Ive been thinking about doing this for awhile but wanted to hear from people who may have done this.

From where are you thinking about hiking from? I did it on the Barr Trail two winters ago. It's really just a big hike. With butt loads of snow. If you have no winter camping experience, I wouldn't suggest this be your first one. The only thing you really need in addition to regular winter camping gear are snowshoes, and possibly a snow shovel with a saw. Depending on your acclimitization and schedule you might be able to go really light and stay at Barr Camp.

When I went my white gas stove would not work no matter how much I fiddled with it. So I'm a big proponent of bringing more than one stove. I didn't drink any water for like twenty four hours and thus couldn't cook the food I brought which meant I ate peanuts and granola.

Don't rely on the road to be open or the train to bring you down. They'll shut down both for adverse weather conditions. Just because you make it up doesn't mean they will even try.

If you gave a general description of your experience and more info on where you were thinking of starting from I could give you more info.

You know...if you're having to ask online, you're probably not really prepared to do this. You'll end up like this guy:

I've done the barr trail in winter a couple of times, it's pretty doable and it was my first winter camping trip. The biggest obstacles are weather and acclimatization (I think). However it's kind of nice to have barr camp and the tree line shelter there for you if you need them.

There's also the crags trail which is alot shorter.

It depends on the amount of snow up there. It's accumulating snow right now for instance. If you were to do the Crags trail, you would want snowshoes for sure. There is more snow on the West side of the peak in general. Crags is shortest way to the summit and easily doable in a day. Barr would be much more strenuous, especially in deep snow. Also, if you do the Crags you cross the toll road at one point and could conceivably hitch a ride down if you wanted to bail.

Depends VERY much on what peaks you are thinking of.

Some places, a warm jacket is enough.

Others, you need to know about avalanches, have a lot of $ of technical clothing, skis can help, the list goes on...

You need a road map and $3 for hot chocolate and donuts.
