Today, I decked from 40 feet after two pieces ripped in a dirty and wet crack.

How far have you gone?

No troll. My neck hurts like a mofo. It may be exaggeration, but it was at least 35. Definitely long enough to think about what was going on.

Cause he forgot to say when the person next to him decked from 10 ft. He looked over so fast he got whiplash. I still call BULLSHIT. Or he was cleaning the leaders gear on toprope and took a huge 2ft victory whipper

Idk man, I decked from 20 ft. once and shattered both wrists plus a ruptured spleen. 40ft and a sore neck seems a little light unless you skidded your way down some slab.

The first time I ever climbed a buddy of mine fell ropeless from 19ft. (yeah 19, we measured later) and he's never walked again. It doesn't take much...

I've decked from a significant distance 4 times.

1st, at the time I thought it was 40 feet but was probably just over 20. I was stemming up the chimney between Harder than Your Husband and Stand and Deliver while being belayed on top. My belayer got pulled forward when I fell and thought she'd get dragged off so she let go and backed up. This was my fault, I set up the belay with too long of slings. This was in my first month as a climber.

2nd, I was trying to freesolo a route in greyrocks and popped off the bottom. I quite a ways but onto a slab then into piles of pine needles. I had a little scrape on my ass. From where I fell to where I stopped was over 30 feet but maybe only 5-10 feet was I actually airborn.

3rd, new belayer at the gym, splat.

4th, this summer I landed flat on my back from a body length above the first bolt on Crankenstein. This freaked me out for a while because I thought it was belay failure and I went around not trusting my partners for a while. I got back on the route with one of my better long time partners, fell again, and decked again (though not quite as hard). This pretty much fixed my head since the fall was just one of those shit things that happen on some routes and not a belay failure.

I'm not sure I would have continued climbing if that happened my first time out.

I've been dropped about 15 feet in the gym. Right on my ass, my lower back hurt for a few weeks after.

Not the deck, but a ledge (which is arguably worse).

~30ft - femur, pelvis, skull and two collapsed lungs.

If I remember correctly Lyn Hill fell from just above the GT ledge at the Gunks, on a free solo of High E. She fell over 100’ , I think she had some bruised or broken ribs from the branches of the tree that broke her fall.
Pretty sure I read it in her book “My Life in the Vertical World” along with a plane crash , a black book , and bails of pot…

Your misinformation is similar to those who think Dan Osman died free-soloing, or El Cap is good training for Everest. Go read that book again.

Seriously. Wrong continent, even. And there was a rope involved. Do they not teach reading comprehension in schools anymore?

Sorry angry; I said if I remember correctly. That is no guarantee, especially with all the years of abuse….
It was on Buffet Froid the Styx Wall , 72 feet . starts on page 6 of Hills book. She was roped up but not tied in correctly. She went down the entire 72’ and got a banged up. You should read it…

CoolAll these stupid questions and even stupider replies. Decking from 40'? You're lucky to be alive!! Learn to set good pro, know when to back off, and climb with an ultra-attentive belayer. That's how you get to be an old climber. Falls are inevitable, but hitting the ground these days with all of the new technology in climbing gear and ropes is just careless or lack of sound judgment. There are always ways to make it safe. Ok, off my soapbox and back to the rocks!! BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!

Like 6 feet, before I evan got a piece placed. I small flake I was standing on broke off. I decked, twisted an ankle and had to shake that off before trying it again.

I have greased off a licheny/wet sloped chimney OW from 8 foot. I have also touched down on a ledge at around 20 foot with the stretch coming out of the rope, slowing me significantly.(1/2 speed)

Any other situation, I know better and when the pro is not optimum to perfect, I consider it DO NOT FALLL terrain, and do not fall. Pretty simple concept really, also mistaken for common sense/ self preservation.

Bob
