There's Jogasaki and Joyama on the Izu peninsula which you should be able to get to by train, and Ogawayama which requires a car. Great climbing.

Yup - qtm has it right. Also add Yugawara/Makuiwa. You can climb all winter long at Yugawara, Joyama and Jogasaki. Ogawayama season is almost over - getting cold up there.

Drop me a note when you get in. I'm up in Tokyo, which is some distance from you; but maybe we can set something up.

(Hey qtm, when you coming back for a visit?)

damn it's about time we got another military climber in this country. What's up man? I live up at Yokota. If you need a climbing partner any weekend i am available. there are about 15 sport crags within 1.5 hours of my house plus areas the other guys listed already. If you are into bouldering there are several boulder fields around as well. I'll send you a pm with my contact info.

When you check into your command. I would implore you to take a walk over to Outdoor Rec. It's right next to the Fleet Recreation Center (unless they moved in the past 4 years.) At the front desk ask to talk with Tetsuya. That will be your single best and most valuable climbing resource on base. PM me if you want to know more and/or the inside scoop.

I'm not sure if anyone is still looing at this thread but....

I am going to be in Yokosuka for work and would love to get out and climb, but need a partner. I will be available the weekend of April 24 (might have only Sunday to climb).

Jogasaki looks pretty awesome, I;m not sure how far it is.

I have sport climbed outdoors, but only followed TRAD. I am probably ok up to 5.10 on lead, but 5.9 is probably better.

If you want to get out email me or PM me. bshangold@gmail.com

I don't know anything about climbing on the base at Yokosuka itself, but I've met and climbed with one of the guys who works (or at least used to work) in their outdoor rec. program. He brought a group up to Ogawayama (one of whom was a navy guy who was a friend and partner of mine), and he was super nice. He was a Japanese guy whose name escapes me right now...

Edited to add - just read back through this thread and saw his name: Tetsuya. Don't know if he's still there, but a good guy for sure, I thought.

Anyway - checking in with those guys is definitely a good suggestion.

We're getting down to the end of the season for Jogasaki, but there's other stuff around as well. (Also, Jogasaki doesn't really have much below 10b, and not much of that...)

I might be able to get spousal dispensation for Sunday the 25th, but can't promise. Feel free to drop me a note if you can't set up something with the on-base folks.

- Bill

Thanks for the reply guys. Bill i will PM you.

Any gyms in the area that are worth it if I don't get outdoors. I only have the one day to climb so if I don't find a local partner I don't think I want to bring too much gear.

WinkHello guys, i'm glad about finding this forum! Actually, i'll be working in Yokosuka for six months. It will be since june to december 2010... so in a few weeks.

I'm a Colombian climber (since 7 years ago) but I've been living in France since 2008. I really love rock climbing (sport, trad and bouldering) but doing some indoor training (during the working days) would be great as well. Let me know if anyone will be around, i would appreciate to move with someone who knows over there... by the way, I should say that my japanese is not enough to survive. Hope to have your news!

Hah - hi Soraya! I just responded to your post on Outdoor Japan, so take a look over there:

By the way, shangold (who posted above) and I got out for a pretty nice day last month, so you can check with him to confirm that he's still alive, if you have any doubts!

Hey Shaz,

October is nice in Japan. There are occasionaly typhoons that time of year, but barring that, you should be good. More specifically, Ogawayama is climbable and usually beautiful. The Tokyo local crags are also cooling down (although it may still be too early for Jogasaki).

However, I wonder if traveling via Tokyo isn't significantly more expensive than taveling via Russia would be? I haven't researched at all, but Japan is generally expensive, and travelling in or out of Japan by air is generally very expensive.

If I'm wrong about the cost, or if you're coming through anyway, I'd be happy to climb with you if I'm around. Not sure exactly what my story will be this far from the date, however. Feel free to contact me again as we get closer.

- Bill

Hi everyone,

I'll be in Japan in October from the 18th for a few weeks, around Nagoya. I should mostly be free on weekends. Anyone wants to go climbing?

I've been climbing in Britain with some weird grading system. I onsight E1 trad and 6b/c sport.

Drop me a line!
Manu

-Manu,
I wanted to give you the Kitayama Makoto (he's the author) climbing guide book info, which you'll find most useful for your area around Nagoya.

It's book number 4 out of his "free climbing" series. ISBN: 978-4-635-18084-9, and it costs 2200 yen. (I had to order it and it took about a week through the bookstore.)

It covers the Toukai area where Nagoya is, along with Kansai and Hokuriku areas to the West of there.

Hope you can find it when you get here. Cheers.

I too got orders to japan, I'm trying to find some good mountains to climb I hiked Takatori-Yama and there is still quite a bit of exploring I've still got to do there. Does anyone know of any other rocks to climb and detailed instructions on how to get there by train or bike?
