Ok first off, let's try to be honest here. No one will be impressed if you make up some sponsors.

Just curious as to whether anyone here is sponsored or actively seeking sponsorship.
If so then how do your sponsors treat you? What demands do they place on you? Do they stand behind you?

I'm neither sponsored, nor have actively sought it, (though I sure as hell wouldn't turn it down. 5.10, are you reading this?) but my old roommate got sponsored. He didn't get a contract or climbing shoes for life or anything like that. He was simply in a party that was going to attempt to climb Mt. Robson; they got in touch with some gear manufacturers, and sure enough, a few weeks before the expedition a box with nice new crampons and ice-axes arrived from Grivel. My roommate at that point climbed mid 5.10's, and was 18 years old. You don't have to have onsighted 5.13's or done half-dome AND El Cap in a day, or soloed Mt. Doom without oxygen, it seems you just have to ask nicely and have a good reason for asking.
Of course, if you want free shoes for life, flashing "Slashface" in flip-flops would probably get someone's attention.

If you flashed Scarface in flip-flops wouldn't they ask you what you needed climbing shoes for? Hmmmm, flip-flop sponsorship, that might work!

Has anyone activley "cold-called" any major compaines for a sponsership or free gear to test or anything. In previous jobs I used to do that to ask for money...but was wondering if any climber has cracked teh code to do it and ask for gear or money for themselves and come up with a plan to promote that company while they climb. Let me know...always ready to do something new:)

I'm not sponsored, but I'd love to be! Maybe once I get out of high school and my climbs are good enough a company will recognize the talent they've been passing up! lol

I am sponsored by a company called asana. ( www.asanapackworks.com ) They treat me really well! I get coaching, dicounts, and free gear. I am receiving discounts and publicity from another company, but that's not really a sponsorship. Any who... if you want one that badly, just train harder, and smile more. After all, sponsorship isn't given out soley based on your ability, a big part of it is your attitued! And climb for the heck of it, don't climb just so you can get deals and stuff, that's not what climbings about!

What do you mean by, "I wish" Sponsorship is not what climbing is about! CLimbing is about you and the rock, having fun, meeting new people, enjoying life... Sponsorship is like the built in spoon on a yogurt lid, you don't need it, but its a nice thing to have

-jtlclimber, 14 is not to young, I'm only 15.

I agree with all of you that Climb for your sponsers you need to look at why you started to climb in the first place. I climb for the simple fact that I want to get out side away from every thing and know that I will not have a group suits looking asking (Are you sure that you are doing that right?)

Well jtl, to name a few, Torri Allen, Eathan Pringle , Emily Harrington, Zoe Rabb, Ali Tabin, Elizabeth Asher, Nick Dogulas and the list goes on. They're everywhere! You asked what you have to be doing, I'm not sure on that. But you just need to get out there. Get your name out, that'll take some time, but don't think about it. You're climbing for the wrong reasons if you're doing it for sponsorships. Its like going for a guy beacuse of his looks. You don't go for a guy just for his looks, he could be a total and complete jerk! Personality is what counts, looks are just a bonus. Like climbing, climb for the love of it, and let the sponsorships be a bonus.
