On 10-9-09, (V) Bryce Richmond and his wife were rock-climbing in an area of the Santa Monica Mountains known as Echo Cliffs. Echo Cliffs is a remote area of the mountains in Ventura County accessible by a hike of about one hour from the Sandstone Peak Trail head. Echo Cliffs is within National Park boundaries.
While climbing on one of the rock faces, Richmond lost his grip and fell. His safety rope caught him and prevented him from falling all the way to the ground, but he swung into the side of the cliff and sustained serious injuries as a result.
