I will be in NYC for work in the near future, and I'm thinking of exploring the gunks for a few days at the end. So that would put me up there ~20Nov. Is this already too late in the season (to escape the logistics of roped climbing, I'm mainly looking to sample the bouldering)? I guess I will be staying in New Palz, and will be without a car. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to find a ride out to the cliffs at this time of the year? Any beta anyone might have would be very appreciated! Thanks

if it's a sunny day, you will be in good shape, that whole cliff acts like a reflector oven and I've climbed there in January in a T-shirt, it may be a little damp in the cracks, but definitely worth a visit. dev

Yes, as long as you stick with the Trapps carriage road boulders, it should be fine. Might get a little cold, but bring a jacket, handwarmers if necessary, and you should be good. Peterskill might be closed by then, I don't remember the dates but they definitely close at some point for the winter. The boulders there are under tree cover so it'd be much colder there anyway.

Great, thanks to both of you. Sounds like it might be worth the trip out there... What about crowds - given reasonable weather, will there be people to share the fun with (and to hitchhike with to get out there)? I wont be able to bring camping gear -- is the hostel in New Paltz a reasonable choice? Thanks again

You can usually find a ride from town if you hang out at rock and snow (local gear shop) for about 5 minutes and act friendly.
