Can you add pinky rests to the old quarks?

Yes, but it's a pain in the ass and involves a sharp knife.

Well, I'm ok with that... is it a legit mod though? Are they still strong?

Yeah, they're still fine. By the bottom spike, you'll have to cut away the rubber at the bottom of the handle until you expose a hole for the pinky mount. RAZOR SHARP blade (I used a box cutter, actually) and small cuts, careful the whole time. If you've got access to a Quark with the pinky rest already attached, use that as a guide to tell you where to cut.

Woah! That's super helpful, thanks. So were there any improvements to the new quark in comparison to the old quark?

If you're into leashes, know that first generation Q's had the hole for the mounting stud a few inches higher on the shaft than later models. On steep ice, the newer design is a tad easier to hang onto. With the higher hole, there is a tendency for the hand to "swing back" off the grip, so even though you're totally hanging in the leash, you need to grip hard to stay connected. To the OP, of course you can also do a ghetto mod on the tools yourself. Let's see if this links you to the recent post in the Worst Photos thread: http://www.rockclimbing.com/..._reply;so=ASC;mh=25;
