Is climbing during hunting season in Jackson Falls sketch? Is there hunting in the valley or is it just the land up top where hunting is allowed?

Climbing in SoIll off the beaten track this time of year is a bad idea - was in '74, still is. Gun nuts from downtown and suburban St. Louis and Chicago gone wild. Better to lay low and let them shoot each other.

I dunno about the scene in So Ill, but when I climb during hunting season, I carry big bright-orange backpack.

i've never heard of an issue at Jackson Falls, other than hunters using the already limited campsites and people being woken at 4:30am by gunshots. granted, i still wear bright clothing. and i make my brindle boxer wear bright clothing. not sure where hunting is limited to. doesn't matter, though, as people do what they want because of lack of DNS presence.

never had a problem. Stay close to the cliffs and if your worried wear bright colors. Fall is prime season down there for lots of activities

If you're getting woken up at 4:30 by gunshots than you need to call the Game Warden. In most every state it is illegal to hunt before sunrise. RR

As a local you have nothing to worry about, but if you stray out to far for J falls proper (ex promised land or RR rock) hunter orange is a good idea. Gun season for deer doesnt start till nov and it isonly 2-3 weekends a year, you dont have to worry about turkey hunters or bow hunters. if you are coming here to go to many bouldering areas then wear orange for sure, there is no bouldering at the holy boulders durring hunting season NONE this is private land. The gun shots that people heard at night were not hunters, they seem to be respectful with there guns, but others climbers drinking and enjoying there firearms. climb hard and enjoy! |

I dunno, you could try wearing a brown coat and wear antlers on your head! I think you'll find out real fast if there are any hunters in the area. I love hunting season. Every year it's the same story. Scores of hunters shooting each other. "Well shit, sorry Joe Bob, you looked like a squirrel!"

yup, last weekend a group of hard-partying, inconsiderate climbers were setting off fireworks at 1am. haven't heard any gunshots.....yet. but every year i hear gunshots before and after the official hunting season, and often before sunrise. would be nice if the game warden or dns were involved. however: a) no cell phone signal to make a call (though some verizon people manage under specific conditions); b) the shawnee covers a large area and local/state/gov't resources are absolute bare minimum.

you are in the country there... you can discharge a firearm outside of hunting seasons... You just can not harvest any walking food outside of its particular season
