hi, next summer i want to send my 15 year old son on a climbing trip. I live in NY and he loves to climb. Does anyone know any "camps' for lack of a better word or trips for minors. Thanks!

Reach out to Dave Rowland at the Philadelphia Rock Gym. He takes a group of teens to the Red every summer. His number: 877-822-ROPE.
He took both of my climbing kids for several summers in a row and they loved every trip.

Just drop him off at the Red, pay upfront for his camping, leave him a months supply of food, give him 100 bucks, and leave him for a month. That would make you the best dad ever.

Where does he climb now? I ask because at 15, my buddies and I would take off climbing on our own. My partner had a license, we split gas, and we camped.
The advice of dropping him off at the red might not be so far fetched depending on his experience level. Yosemite would be even better and safer to be honest.
My wife and I will be spending the summer in Lake Tahoe. We've often adopted lone climbers we met.

I'm sure there are more but the only other climbing camp I know of is Yo Basecamp based near Yosemite. Also a great program with awesome owners and one session per year Chris Sharma is an instructor!

Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School in North Carolina offers a great sumer camp program. http://www.rockclimbingsummercamps.com/
If you live in NY, a much closer options would be to look into the "Gunks." The Shawangunk Mountains located in the Mohonk Preserve near New Paltz are a super-popular climbing destination and I would be surprised if someone wasn't running a summer program.
If your son's fairly responsible, the Yosemite/Red River Gorge thing would be pretty awesome, too.

so true! I have been doing trips since I was 15.... I just found someone to go with, go some money and went. Didn't need a camp or a guide... you just use some initiative and go. My trips were not paid for by parents or anything... it really isn't 'beyond' a 15 year old to figure out some logistics and make some money... I even took the greyhound bus to squamish once and set myself up for a dew days in a hostel (luxury trip!) by myself, I was 16.... its pretty easy to do :)

Are you looking for a residential camp? The guide service I work for does a non-residential, week-long youth program in the Gunks. It's tailored more toward newer climbers, but the agenda is flexible.

Wilderness Ventures does a nice job. Not 100% climbing, but he'd learn a lot about how to move around in the mountains, plan a trip, work as part of a team, etc. Outward Bound and NOLS would have things also. All these are if you want him to have more supervision than the "just drop him off at Camp 4" option...expensive, though.

Let him go on his own trip. When I was 15 I was climbing with friends on our own, it was a blast. Had some awesome times that we'll never forget.

Ditto on gblauer's recommendation of the PRG camps at the Red. They're a lot of fun, include sport and gear climbing, and introduce the athletes to the "climbing culture" while providing supervision and oversight. The PRG RRG camps are aimed more towards experienced climbers, i.e indoor leading and lead belaying experience but that can be negotiated as well.
