Showmanship. Obviously, there's a guy filming the grigri who could have undone it. She was going to free solo that no matter what, but for the show, they figured they'd make a small dramatic story out of it. Nonetheless, if she really is free soloing that, she's got a pair much larger than mine.

charlie.elverson wrote: anyone speak Japanese? I'm curious what the narrator is saying. Pretty much what you'd expect. (The climber is Catherine Destivelle, by the way - not sure if you can make it out with the Japanese pronounciation at the beginning.) "Blah, blah... unexpectedly her rope gets stuck." The red caption at the bottom says "An inconceivable accident occurred!", and the narration says basically the same thing. "Her rope has become stuck below, and she is completely unable to pull it up. Rather, it threatens to pull her off. She is at a point about a third of the way to the summit and this is a horrific situation. Blah, blah... At this point, she takes shocking action - she unties her safety line and drops it... blah, blah, squeezing out the last of her strength she resumes the climb... blah, blah." It goes on for quite a while, obviously. If there's any specific part you're wondering about, let me know.

Catherine Destiville is perhaps the greatest female alpinist of her time if not all time. She's free soloed hard routes the world over and done some of the most ungodly (or godly, if you're an alpinist I suppose) solos of mountain routes ever. She won many world cup sport climbing events. Her winter repeat of Bonatti's north face route on Matterhorn is utterly amazing. Certainly the best all arounder of her generation of women climbers there is no question about that. I'm jus sayin... Jeff Lowe considers her one of the greatest of all time. DMT

You can't exactly say 'Acting at it's worst', but you could pillory the stage direction and props department for stupidity.

Agreed that Catherine D is one of the better female alpinists to ever put on a pair of crampons. What's unspeakably sad is that someone of her talent had to resort to working for a film maker doing such a Hokey, Half Assed "Climbing" film to pay her bills....basically as bad as those "ExtREEEEEME" TV shows they feed to the sub epsilon semi morons in "Idiocracy". NEXT....an ALLL NEEW EPISODE of "OW, MY BALLS".... Poor "Cathereenua"

I've seen this movie in English, without the monster movie sound effects. J3, petsfeds roommate showed it to me 10 years ago. I'm sure he's still got it if the tape isn't worn out by now.
