As I said, I'm 37 and tried an IUD in my late 20s, so it was 8-9ish years ago. I'm pretty sure it was the Paragard. I am just insanely jealous of the women for whom it works!

Hey, I just wanted to give an update on my Mirena experience. I've had it since March and I have to say, I'm thrilled. At first, I had cramping and lots of breast tenderness. Now, that's all gone. I barely even have a period. Yay! I still do seem to get the PMS crazies, but no worse than on any other hormonal BC. Other than that, not having to worry about taking a pill every day is so nice. Good luck with your decision. :)

I love my IUD and I am on my second Mirna. I don't have a period anymore nor cramping. My husband did complain about the string on the first one. The not having to remember to take a pill and not having crampy periods on road trips was worth his vary mild grumbles.

I just started indoor climbing last month/in my early 50's/uterine fibroids/two grown daughters. Lots of cramping on insertion, but only lasted a day or two. I've had the Mirena for almost 2 months now. The first month my period was light and lasted 2 weeks. This month only a couple days of spotting. I've not felt any weakness or craziness using this IUD. So far this works in decreasing my flow/pain as uterine fibroids cause heavy/painful bleeding.

I'm so sorry I didn't see this sooner! Glad to hear all of the great success with various methods. I've been on the depo shot since I was 15 (now 30) due to horrible cramping and excessive everything. It's worked great for me (not for everyone though) but I know it wont last forever. Will likely have to try something new soon.

I get no monthly cramps whatsoever. Mood swings and chocolate cravings - ah, yes.

+1 on the Mirena. I haven't had any kids (but hope to in the future), and had it inserted in 2007. I can't imagine going back. I never had PMS symptoms that I noticed before that, so I can't say how much it will help with them, but I do like the way I feel off of oral birth control. Bonus: I haven't had a period since insertion. For what it's worth: you might want to plan to lay low for a day or two after you get it. I remember the day I had it inserted: I was throwing up in a paper bag while driving 85 mph on the 405 to LAX to pick up a friend who was flying in. Turns out the sudden change in hormones didn't sit so well with me.
