Areas badly in need of a gym

I was wondering if anyone lives in a city/ or high population area that does not have access to a climbing gym or possibly has access to only one incredibly low quality gym to the point where they dont bother anyway.

I have heard that possibly the northern chicago suburbs and the chicago metro area in general would fit into this category I'd imagine there are other places around that could easily support a gym but don't have one.

So let me know! I'm doing some initial research into opening a gym so it would be interesting to hear.

Thanks!

Poor Savannah has no rock at all. The place is as flat as florida. The nearest crags are forever away and the pop. density isnt all that high.
My mother and brother both live there and I visit from time to time, but when I visit I take the Playboat Kayak to the ocean for some Kayak surfing. Or spend time picking oysters and such.
A friend of mine has looked into the possibility of opening a gym there and could not see the numbers add up.
Suburbs of chicago. In Crystal Lake there used to be a gym back in um 1998 when I lived there it may or may not be there any longer. Take that back just found the site. Its called the North Wall.
I am lucky enough to live in Atlanta and have a plethora of gyms here to chose from. Although I regularly visit only one because the others are weak sauce. We have a new gym opening in March and will be the biggest in the country. We will see how that works out. If the setters suck than well it will fail. If the setters are decent they may have a shot. but the community here is big and the gyms are getting sicker and sicker.
Good luck with your endevor have you checked Seattle. I love that place lived there for three years and do not remember a gym. but that was in 1995.
Or how about I dont know any where there is rock within 2 hours away but lacks a gym.
You are getting in a little late in the game here. As most of the better areas have a gym esablished and the members are loyal. Here at least...

Tri-Cities area of East Tennessee.

This includes Johnson City, Bristol TN/VA, and Kingsport. Quarter million people in the MPO, numerous colleges and a large university and no gyms. Lots of nice old affordable 3-4 story buildings (ok, so they're pieces of shit, but cheap) in down town Johnson City. Plenty of climbers and outdoorsy folks/families. Famous climbing destinations are only 1-2 hours away, climbers around here would love a real gym. (No, ETSU's dinky little students-only wall doesn't count.) I'd have a hard time thinking a gym with a solid business plan couldn't make it in this market.

Please, come down here and open a gym! We have mountains right into town but lack the stinky hippies and McMansion dwelling yuppies of asheville, which is only an hour to our south. Nice area to live. Cost of living is about as cheap as it gets.

that actually sound pretty promising! Ill definately look into it.

unfortunately it seems like mcmansion dwelling yuppies are probably as or more important to the profitability of a rock gym (through corporate groups and birthday parties) than people that actually climb rocks, but I think any area that has a large enough young population can probably float a climbing gym

Don't get me wrong. We still have our affluent neighborhoods, its just that you can actually see the mountain ridges around here and they aren't blighted with 5,000 sq ft vacation homes or private golf courses. A large contingent of the region's healthcare industry is based around here. Read: lots of doctors that need new places to host birthday parties for junior.

Greensboro, NC actually has a decent gym facility, however, they suck pretty bad...let me explain...they are only open from 5p - 9p. This would be tolerable if the rates were adjusted properly, however, they still charge 450.00 a year to climb those weak hours. Personally I would join if they were open a little more. Just my soap box...sorry.

Winston Salem NC is approx 30 minutes away and there is no gym there. It would be a great place for a gym due to a large amount of climbers in the area. It is densely populated and I think you would get good business from many people. Especially those not willing to put up with the BS at Greensboro's gym.

Yes! I'd be nice to not have to drive 2.5 hours east or west to get to a gym.

Off of the State college PA wikipedia
In reply to:
As of the 2000 census, the borough population was 38,420,
Most of which are college kids.

Honestly a large gym there seems like it would be doomed. Maybe a small bouldering gym right near the campus though

So far Lincoln, winston salem and the tri state area of Tennessee all seem plausible Tennessee definately seems like the best.

Anyone know anything about the scenes in either Lexington Ky or Cherry Hill Nj?

The Eastern Tennessee one would work...no gyms and some solid sport climbing areas to get those addicted indoors out on the rock.

Asheville, NC...ABSOLUTELY needs a gym. In fact, I've been looking into that one for awhile.

I'm in Bakersfield...it needs a gym. On paper, the numbers look good, but the population is mostly low paying farm workers and lower middle class, the same demographic that also suffers from obesity...not tendonitis or any other over use injury.

anm89, can we talk off-line? I've been looking for someone who is considering a project like this and is serious about making it happen.
