WTF? I hate to bitch but I spent well over $100 (just on the cam not counting special tools) and a month of my free time making last year’s cam, I didn’t do it for the prize as much as bragging rights. This whole drop test seems kinda lame to me, 200lbs? I weight over 200lbs, you better drop the thing at least 100ft. I’m not saying no but I would like a little more detail on this drop test before I go through the trouble. After last year’s cam didn’t hold much I was concentrating on strength this year but if it’s going to be just for show I won’t bother. You’re supposed to raise the bar every year not lower it. Edit to add: Thank you for extending the deadline to February. I was worrying about having time with house projects and Christmas.

Whether I compete or not I still extend my offer to those looking for materials. I work in a metal shop that sells 6061 T6 alum flat bar in various widths and thicknesses and is sold by the linier foot. I can also get a hold of mild steel (couldn’t tell you the alloy), 304 SS, and 4140 chromoly round bar. I can’t get a discount but I’ll bet it’s cheaper than McMaster or some others, also you pay shipping. I’m not a supplier and I don’t want to deal with a bunch of orders so this offer only applies to competitors (sorry). (Admin let me know if I over stepped here). I personally will turn no profit from this PM me with what you need and I’ll let you know what I can do.

Where's points for innovation?! Also, I would recommend a sliding scale for hand tooling, based on the extent..... so, a basic forged friend would get a smaller number of points than a cam hand filed in its entirety out of a solid block of Al with Celtic knots engraved into the lobes...... Either way, hand tooling is a big deal, but one is certainly harder than the other. Or perhaps the points would show up elsewhere - fit and finish, bling, innovation, etc. Because, that would be in my favor for points

Pull testing the prototype cam for proof of concept: (test cam blurred out for security purposes It pulled out between 14-16 kN, and got mangled, but we were not able to actually break anything. Sweet!!!! Breaking stuff is SO Much FUN! Now, time to build the real thing, nice and pretty, with some double innovation on top. Thanks for extending the deadline too... More time to refine!

I think you should just do a better job, not trying to be a jerk but I’ve been a welder/fabricator for 8 years, I was a machinist for 4 years, I have a side business doing Auto Cadd work, and I’ve been woodworking and building stuff for fun my whole life. The water jet is a tool I use not a tool I need, I figured out how to make my web cam with hand tools last year because it cost so much to water jet. In the end it was faster and I didn’t have the time but if I made more of them I would make them by hand. If you want to make more “fair” maybe a professional and amateur class, but don’t dumb it down please. Edit to add: I do kinda miss the innovation points but that is very subjective and hard to judge. For instance I would have thought using welded chain link as your shaft would give you full innovation points but it didn’t give any. What can you do?

adatesman wrote: 3. Rschap- A rough, back of the envelope calculation puts dropping 200# of steel FF1 onto chain at ~38kN. I haven't yet actually tried it to verify the calculation, but have no fear- nothing will survive. My concern is less about whether or not all the cams are destroyed and more about continuity. At the end of last year’s comp Batguano, and Grover could say that their cams were tested to the same standards as any commercial cam and did better than most and this year we’ve lost that. Particularly for those of us that did not do that well last year I think it’s important to test to the same standard so we can track our progress and see if the improvements we’ve made were the right ones. I thought the point of this comp was to show that we can make a cam every bit as good as a commercial cam. I also feel that I am competing against my shameful showing last year and not just the current field. Sorry about the rant, but I’ve been looking forward to this comp all year and after this I’m not sure I even want to compete. In my opinion any test other they the UIAA test is pointless and a waste of time. I would almost rather not compete and just have my cams tested to the UIAA standards.

How about a proof loading stage before the drop test? Pull all the cams to a reasonable force then discard all the ones that don't pass. The cams that make it to the next round get extra points.

I have no experience, and won't humiliate myself with an entry, but I'm really excited to see the entrants this year! Woo-hoo! I'll get my popcorn ready! All you cam-makers rock my world! GO

Damn I’m sorry Aric, I can see wanting to play with your new toy. Now I feel bad, but do I think it would be better this way, thank you for changing it. I think maybe we ought to have a homemade nut or belay device comp so we can try that bad boy out. So the guy that sent you the picture of that bad ass wood cam going to compete in the beauty pageant this year? That one would be hard to beat but I’d like to try. Pictures only this year…

I just want my nalgene test. C'mon, Aric, for entertainment purposes. It'd be like the guy biting the head off a chicken in front of the carnival!

Just want to throw it out there that I would very much like to see drop-test cam 'splosions on hi-speed HD.

As I sit here working on my cams, since everyone that I was going to Ouray with bailed and my wife is working, how much would it suck to submit two cams and split your votes on the beauty pageant there for losing? Would it be possible to submit multiple cams for the overall but only one for the BP? It would make sense to not allow this as it would discourage one from submitting multiple cams. I go back and forth on which way I think is more fair, what do you guys think?
