I am a crag rat looking at a possible move to Anchorage. Is there a lot of crag climbing there or is it almost exclusively ice/mountaineering? please no sarcasm, I don't know Alaska, so only respond if you have climbed around the Anchorage area (or have a guide book memorized). Thanks, pat

There are quite a few options near Anchorage. The closest, but crappiest, is Turnagain Arm. Nice for after work. For a longer day, and all within 2 hours: Hatcher Pass Ravine Lake Weiner Lake (most crag rat like) Purinton Creek Dew Mound (Eagle River valley) and Byron Glacier (Portage) Middle Glacier at Portage has very sharp rock, not recommended.
