Homemade Mountaineering Axe

Hey guys,

Figured you guys would appreciate this. I had some spare time to kill, so decided I'd try making an axe. No idea if it will ever get used or not, but it was an easy way to kill a Saturday afternoon.

The axe head is made out of a 1/4" thick Ford leaf spring. The shaft is a piece of aluminum stock I had kicking around. The spike is a Chevy Suburban radiator quick connect fitting with a bolt pushed through the center. The bolt was then ground down to a point.

Pretty heavy and ugly and overkill, but probably works well for chopping steps haha

Tool-making is a lost art.

Good job! Good on you.

Leaf springs are made from hard steel you should make ice tools out of what you have left, they'd be heavy though. I made tools out of 3/16 AR plate and the damn things weigh a ton.

You could use it for dry tooling.

Leaf springs are without a doubt the best steel a guy can get (cheaply that is). The only tricky part is re-tempering them after you've bent the "curve" out of them. If you have a coal forge and some heavy bar stock it's easy, but if not it gets a little trickier. Your best bet is to find a spring that has been "sprung" (yes that's a technical term haha). Usually old Firebirds or an old crate truck are great places to salvage sprung springs from.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Like I said, she's ugly as hell and really quite heavy, but probably bomber. And do forgive the teeth: with the tools I was using that was as good as I could get. A dremel won't hardly mark spring steel stock haha.

I just ordered an axe that while not homemade in the sense yours is, is made in someones home. It's rad.

What I'd do with your axe is keep it behind the seat or in the trunk to dig out from snow drifts or fight mutant cave monsters with. It's awesome like that.
