Hello, I need to be in San Antonio for work Jan 17-20. I plan to fly down a couple days early and get some climbing in. Anything with in a couple hours drive. I'll be climbing with an occasional climbing co-worker so 5.10 and under sport routes would be best . I'll leave the trad gear at home. Any advice on where to climb, route info, good food and any inexpensive lodging would be great. Thanks, Adam

I'd love to, but that's a bit far for a day, maybe day and a half of climbing. We'll get in late afternoon Friday and need to be back in San Antonio mid day Sunday. Anything closer? Adam

Enchanted Rock is about 1.5 hours north of SA. Excellent granite, plenty of sport stuff there, but you'll be wishing you had your rack. Reimers Ranch is all sport, shorter, limestone, just west of Austin almost as far as Erock.

If it's really worth the effort, I'll bring the rack. Just trying to keep the bags a little lighter. Is there a guide book? Posting on this forum is the beginning of my research.

Both guides are on this page. Austin Rock will cover Reimers. Reimers is a little more straight-forward to get lots of routes done in a day, while E-Rock is more spread out... but also better climbing. You may want to drive the Friday night and stay both nights.

E-rock Once you get in the climbing areas the routes are right next to each other. Not sure where you at, ask one of the local climbers or guides. One should not get lost at ERock or Reimers, pretty much straight forward. Someone suggested El Potrero Chico...how about Hueco Tanks just 71/2 hours on I-10W. Camping is about the cheapest means, but Fredericksburg has some nice B&Bs and some motels. Great food well it all depends on what you like. Cooper's BBQ in Llano is excellent. Fredericksburg also has great eats. The Old German Bakery has the best breaksfast in the town.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look in to lodging in Fredricksburg. Weather's looking cold right now so I hope it warms up in the next 10 days. Will there usually be people climbing if the temps are low? I was last a Hueco just after the restrictions on visitor numbers went in place ('98 maybe?) It's a bit far for this trip but what are restrictions now? It was 50 people a day back then. Adam

People will climb out there, at Erock, so long there is no rain. In fact I had friends who climbed out there when it was in the 100Fs. On Hueco you have make reseravation here is the link: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/hueco_tanks/

Thanks all, It poured rain on Friday and into Saturday morning. We checked out the museum of the Pacific War in Fredricksburg on Sat Morning. Well worth the visit. We climbed E-rock in the afternoon and Sunday morning. Cheers

I forgot about the Pacific War Museum in Fredericksburg. It is pretty impressive, and it is housed in Adm. Nimitiz family's hotel. I am glad you got to climb at Erock. The weather today is really good, but darn I am trapped at the office. Come back to Texas...you hear!

UTSA, only if you are a student, faculty, or staff, but you may get sponsored by the previously mentioned, that I am aware of. They do have some rules too, some a little weird and some practical. http://www.utsa.edu/recreation/outdoor/rock_wall.cfm
