I may be getting a job offer in Pinecrest. I have no idea what it is like. The stuff I found on line makes it and the surrounding areas seem remote/small town. That's cool with me, but my wife may not dig it. She wants to be able to go back to school and pursue a PHD in law. Is this just not possible without driving ridiculous amounts of time. from what I saw, neither UC Stanislaus or CSU Merced offer what she wants. I'm sure the climbing is awesome, but we (the collective) need more. Any insight on this?

There is some good climbing near pinecrest. See "A Climbers Guide to the Sonora Pass Highway" by Brad Young. also... http://www.sonorapassclimbing.com/ Not only is Pinecrest a small town, its even smaller than Sonora, which is also a small town. You might check out Humphreys College in Stockton for the Law School thing. Do you really mean PHD? Or JD? Good luck.

Yeah, a JD. Thanks for the link. The climbing looks good. Stockton, CA is too far of a drive, IMHO. It's starting to look like this move is not meant to be.

i lived in Pinecrest last summer, and as far as I can remember the nearest place that would offer that program would be stockton. maybe collumbia college in Sonora (http://www.gocolumbia.edu) would, but I very highly doubt it. What brings you to Pinecrest? Seems like an odd time for the forest service to be hiring seasonals.

Yeah. Would be tough. Living in Sonora might make it possible for both of you. Sonora is a charming place and not so dinkey as Pincecrest. She gets the Prius, and you get the 4wd. Would be worth a visit before committing to it...

The job would be with the USFS, but it would be permanent, not seasonal. That is if I even get it. Columbia doesn't have that program, I looked into it.

I know the area very, very well. Pinecrest is a solid 30-40 minutes from Sonora, depending upon WHERE in Sonora. Sonora is 2 hours driving time from Sacramento and an hour and a half from Stockton. Each way. Even if you split the difference, say a house in Copperopolis.... your wife is still facing a commute Hell. Something just occurred to me... check your PMs DMT

The County Courthouse is in Sonora, so you might have local clerking options, once she gets that far along. The commute to a JD program would be long. On the other hand, it's only two years or so, and most places won't have daily classes. Sonora does have a small public law library. UoP would be one option; another would be the Bay Area schools, a local room rental, and commute via the train in Tracy.
