It sounds like he got stuck in a chimney...which I can see happening. The article states that he was stuck, but also that he clung on for 6 hours by his fingertips....reporters are OBVIOUSLY embellishing that one. If you're stuck in a chimney, how are you also clinging for dear life by fingertips?

few years back ,there was another case in UK where party of two climbers were climbing in snow one fell toward a very bad roof and he arrested by his partner's rope for like 12 hours while partner was facing the snow and ice with his crampons stopping his descent . neither of them were able to do self rescue cause the bottom guy could not jug up and and top guy could not set a Z rig. Finally the top guy managed to use his phone and called for SAR. I think I posted the report in RC in 2007 or 2008, can't remember but it was amazing.

"In February 2008, a 61-year-old climber was trapped on Lochnagar with an injured leg after he was swept from near the top of a gully by an avalanche and left stranded miles from safety while a storm battered the mountainside. Bill Church managed a four-hour agonising crawl for a kilometre to a metal box used by mountain rescue teams to store kit. Discarding the ropes and other equipment from the desk-sized box, he clambered in, wrapped himself in the bivvy bag inside, closed the lid and waited for help." hard.core

I think it sucks hearing of people getting themselves in a pinch by not using their brain. Why would a 61 y.o. be out in a storm on top of avalanche conditions solo? It sounds like a suicide trip to me. I think europeans take Bear Grylls' advise too literally.

Who ever heard of an American with his arm pinched under a boulder for 3 days who ended up cutting it off with a Swiss Army knife? Not me, that's for sure.

I've heard of a guy who cut his arm off and now he is making 6 figures a year. I don't call that stupid, I call that smart.
