Does any one know what is the rating system in japan compared to the rating system in the us.

The site above references bouldering. I haven't bouldered in Japan so I don't know.

Routes in the areas around Tokyo that I've been to all use YDS. My guide book for the Izu Peninsula is all YDS.

Might be different in other areas.

  From what I have seen a mix of different rating systems is used. I've been to Horu-iwa, just outside of Kobei, where they use the UIAA rating system. The dan system comes from karate rankings, where 1-dan would be a first-degree blackbelt.
I have also seen some of the most hilarious guiding practices ever when I was there, but that's another thread.

The usual ranking system for non-bouldering routes is usually YDS, but you will also find some routes listed with European grades. The older climbs often use a German system.
