Hey everyone,

I'm letting everyone know this, just in case someone runs into someone that's selling gear that just doesn't sound right.

Last night my shop was broken into, and everything was taken and I really do mean everything. I haven't done an actually inventory yet. But ballpark, 50 draws, 100 carabiners, 14 ropes, 4 sets of cams, 5 sets of nuts, 10 down jackets, etc etc etc etc. So please, please, keep an eye out for anything suspicious if you're buying something second hand from someone. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Eric

Redpoint is a great store and treated us very well when I visited Smith Rock.

Best wishes on getting this resolved so that everyone gets what they deserve.

A bump, and also some more information.

If anyone finds out anything here is some contact information. You can either call me, 541-923-6207. Or the best bet is the local sheriff's office. Their phone number is 541-693-6911. The Sheriff in charge of the case is Gary Cima, but you can talk to anyone else there as well.

I'm working on the inventory right now, and will have a pretty long list of items stolen, so you know what to be on the look out for. Thanks for all the support.

Are you hoping the culprits get hurt on an easy climb??? That's f#&ked up. A jail sentence and probation would suffice.

And Eric.....Im sorry dude. I hope everything goes well for you.

You might cross post on supertopo too. Gear thieves are the lowest form of life.

A great thing about climbing and climbers has always been mutual respect for gear and possessions. Been leaving pack and expensive gear at the ol' base for years and never had a prob -- really hoping this doesn't change.

I think the vast majority of gear theft is from non-climbers, so keep a keen eye out for people selling gear and not knowing what they are talking about. If you look past it when "it don't smell right" then you are part of the prob.

These kinds of people cost us extra money on every single item we buy. from food to gear, to well eveything.
It is nearly imposable to estimate their actual cost. suffice to say it is way beyond what most would ever assume. Then they go to jail (maybe and only if they are caught) where there they cost us even more
So if Karma deals them a payback blow i will not lose any sleep of them.ON the other hand I will never assume that the guy laying at the bottom of a climb is one of these. They will get all the help and compasion I can give. there Karma is between them and their maker

Unfortunate thing is that even if caught a thief most likely won't serve a day in jail. At my workplace our former receptionist ripped our clinic for over $1600 in cash, was caught and has a suspended sentence.

Sorry to hear that....I remember the Gendarme at Seneca was robbed one Friday night...I think in 1988 or so. Anyway John (the owner) travelled around to several climbing areas and found the crooks. They were skinheads. John Markwell got the local cops and they arrested them, took them to jail and put them in with some rough African Americans. Those skinheads took some good beatings, but then got off with a fine, but John got a lot of his store stuff back. Anyway, best luck in getting your stuff back.

Bump and semi update.

Bad news first. Insurance will not cover theft. Turns out I only had liability insurance. I thought insurance was like car insurance, all aspects are covered, just depends how much coverage and how big your deductible is. Biggest mistake of my life, ever.

Other fact, not sure if this is good or bad. Alarm went off, but Sheriff's station was never notified about the alarm. Either when I switched phone companies they messed with the line, or the people I use to monitor the alarm messed up. I pay a place in Redmond for the alarm, and they sub-contract it out to a bigger place in Portland to monitor. I don't know if anyone is a lawyer, but if anyone is at fault, would it be the right move to sue? I don't want to be that "guy" who sues....

Some Good news, the restaurant across the street has a camera that faces the parking lot and pretty much the door they broke in through. So once the police get the footage they should have a good lead. They'll have how many people, the make and model of the vehicle and a license plate. So thieves if you're reading this, just hand back the stuff, all will be forgiven and we'll just forget about this.

Thanks for all the support everyone.
Eric

Good luck in catching those dudes.

Even if you get the stuff back, it might be worth trying to find some compensation anyway to replace some of the gear (even if you get it back). Personally, if I owned a shop and had gear stolen, particularly soft goods, I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it again. If it was my own gear then maybe I'd still use it if I was hard up for cash, but new gear? You just don't know what's happened to it (thrown in the trunk of a car where an old battery was stashed, etc) and it would suck if you sold something that ended up being damaged because of this instance.

Still, though keep on plugging and I hope you nab those bastards.

Not to sound unsympathetic or anything but, at least in PA, that's not how auto insurance works either. Collision and Comprehensive cover different stuff and both can be waived.

Hope you catch the guys.

Eric,

I'm really sorry to hear about your store getting robbed. That suck for sure.

It sounds like you learned a valuable lesson the hard way. "Theft" is a 'Property' coverage in insurance. You are insuring your property against the possibility of it being stolen. (property insurance covers your loss, liability insurance covers other peoples losses which you are responsible for) You need to get a good BOP (business owners policy) which combines liability and property coverages, or separate property and liability policies. But I'm probably repeating what you have recently learned.

As far as your alarm not going off... I'm not a lawyer, but I do work in insurance. I would think that you may well have a legitimate suit against your alarm provider. What you need to do is review any contract you have with the alarm company and then contact a local lawyer for consultation. If I were you this would be a HUGE priority for me, as it may be the ONLY way for you to recoup any losses. They 'promised' you a service and didn't deliver. You have a real gripe there (as long as it is not your fault that service was interrupted).

It is awesome that the restaurant across the street probably caught this on their cameras. Hopefully the cops will catch these jerks. I would note that even if the cops do succeed in catching the thieves, you should still file a complaint with your alarm provider. At the very least some free service is due to you. I suggest this for two reasons. 1 - stated above, you alarm company does not appear to have delivered on their promise. 2 - As Greg noted in his post above, there may be reasons for concern in selling stolen climbing goods (in which case you should be looking to recoup losses and destroy the suspect goods).

I wish you the best in rectifying this situation and moving forward with your new business. Hope this all comes out in the wash.

Bump/ Update.

Yesterday I was on the phone all day calling gyms, climbing shops and consignment stores from the bay area to Vancouver, Canada. I sent them a list and a flyer of what brands were stolen and who to contact if they have any information. I didn't contact many gyms in the bay, just the touchstone group ones. So if any of you want to give out more flyers to the gyms in that area or even farther south, please do. I will not mind at all.

I'm looking into the old employees, and would be shocked if any of them took it. There's only one I can think of and that person lives in southern CA. But I guess this would be worth the trip. I've only owned the shop since August, so I don't have ex-employees.

I'm still looking into the alarm company, and am waiting for some more information to come. I have to look over the contract, and contact some other 3rd party to get a second opinion. It looks like this might be a lead, just need more information. I have been in contact with my lawyer about all of this.

Still waiting on the security tape, oi, it's taking forever.

Again thanks for all support, everyone.
Eric

So sorry for your loss. A few years back, someone came thru Skull Hollow during the day and stole one persons gear from each site (at our site it was my stuff). I feel for you guys, you have a great shop.
