I don't currently have an autolocking belay device, and I was considering getting a grigri or a cinch. Possibly a Faders SUM. The SUM and the Eddy seem to heavy to me...
Anyway, I was hoping to be able to use one autolocking belay device for a variety of uses -- sport, solo toproping, short fixing...etc.
I'm under the assumption that a grigri will work for all of the above activities, but I'd rather get a Cinch as it's lighter and cheaper. I've also heard that it's now easier to rappel with.
Any input?

I posted here and didn't get any responses. I figured more people look at the gear section, and it's relevant to both boards.
It seems to have worked, I actually got a couple replies in the other thread.
Sound reasonable?

Never used one but Malcom from Trango has adimantly advised against using the cinch for rope soloing here on rockclimbing.com and supertopo.
Then again so does Petzl.

The only thing I use my Cinch for is belaying a second. My wife tends to hang a lot so the Cinch is a godsend on multipitch routes and it's light enough to justify carrying it up routes with me. I've tried belaying a leader with it, but can't seem to pay out rope as easily as with a Grigri.

If you're unable to quickly pay out slack with a cinch, you might be using it wrong. It's definitely faster than the grigri when used properly. It's actually so much faster/cleaner that I swear it's not even a contest. Are you trying to pay out slack by using the lever used for lowering?

Thanks for the youtube link....maybe I'll have to give it another try on lead belay. Just so used to an ATC...old habits die hard.

All I can tell you is that a Gri Gri works well for all those applications. I've seen the Cinch used for sport belaying and once on multipitch trad, but I've never seen someone use it for short fixing or solo toproping.
Perhaps it's just that the Gri Gri has been around longer, but if it was me, I'd want to see others using the Cinch in those alternate modes before I went out and did it myself.

you dont really want to use a cinch for a rope solo (lead)- damn thing wont pay out slack while climbing- mostly because the device pays out slack when held in the right orientation, which its not when sitting loose on your belay loop.
short fixing/rope soloing is best left to the grigri, imho. that said, there is nothing better for general belay use, imho.

You seem knowledgeable enough, how is it that you're using the Cinch wrong.
I challenge every person who's ever lived and will ever live to a rope feeding race. I get a Cinch, they get a GriGri.
Like the above poster said, it's now a contest.
Also, I'd be perfectly happy to TR solo with it. In fact, I've done it as a backup to my mini-trax before. I have never led on it though, as per Malcolm's suggestions.

angry- see my edit. i was talking about leading on rope solo, but apparently cant type what i think.
i dont use anything but the cinch for lead belaying these days.
