Lentils are freaken awesome! I just changed my eating plan a bit and I added lots of legumes... Lentils are by far my favourite. I'd trade my birthright for them... Do you eat lentils? Any interesting recipes?

hell yeah, lentils are awesome. they change flavor with what you cook them with (and you can make a whole bag and they'll last for days). I usually slow cook them with things like: spicy sausage jalapeno peppers green chilis sweet peppers mushrooms (these don't work so well in my experience) zuchinni celery tomato (diced tomatoes) shallots chili powder fish (usually I cook the fish separately and then add it for flavoring later) I've also had it with the kind of beef you use for pot roast (I didn't actually buy it so I can't say what it is, but I simmered it with the lentils). I typically let the whole concoction simmer on low for about 45 minutes.

I fried some onion and very finely chopped zuccini until the onions turn sticky brown, then I added the cooked lentils with just a dash of chilli and a big glug of olive oil. Yummy! If you don't add very dominating flavours, the real lentil taste comes to light and it's soooo nice.

Lentils are awesome. The easiest lentil recipe I know is to add tortellini to lentil soup, along with some spinach and any other veggies you want to make lentil-tortellini stew. Another is to mix them with wild rice, caramelized mushrooms and onions and various spices for a sort of wild-rice-lentil pilaf. If you're cooking the lentils yourself, try cooking them in broth, instead of water. It wasn't terribly simple, but one of the best lentil dishes I've tried was with shrimp. I used the shrimp shells to make shrimp stock, used the stock to make the lentils, and grilled the shrimp and various veggies in a sesame-oil-curry rub. I laid the shrimp and veggies on top of a lentil bed. Use colorful veggies. Fucking fantastic, I tell you. I think I need to cook me some lentils this weekend.

Go Indian. Grind the dried lentils into a flour, mix with raw onions, cilantro, curry leaves, cumin. Then pan fry. Also works well as a coating for meats. Or just mix the flour with tons of sugar and ghee (clarified butter). They also work really well in salads after cooking and cooling.

They give my dog noxious gas. Room clearing, glass etching gas. Face melting, paint peeling gas. Needless to say the doggie-vegan diet that a friend fed him is not on the list for adoption.

airscape wrote: Lentils are freaken awesome! they really are! I add lentils to pretty much any stew I make. One recipe that is a super-big hit with my familiy lately (courtesy of camhead, but i think with my modifications): Note:volumes are very approximate, I never measure things by cups, just throw them in: Brown a pound of ground beef with chopped onions, add sweet potato chunks (2-3 sweet potatoes), a cup of lentils, half a cup of barley, big heaping tablespoon of curry paste, about 8 cups of boiling water, and let it cook on low until lentils and barley are soft. At some point during cooking add fork-mashed/chopped baked butternut squash. and adjust salt/seasonings to taste. Another is a crockpot recipe: Chicken pieces (with bones) or any stew meat (lamb is esp good, or beef) Chopped large onion Chopped carrot and 2 celery ribs 1 cup lentils 1 cup soaked chickpeas (or chickpeas from a can) 1 large can (32oz) of stewed diced tomatoes ( or equivalent amount of fresh tomatoes, or about 12 oz of tomato paste) 1 stick of cinnamon 1 tbsp ground coriander 1/2 tbsp ground turmeric salt and ground red chili pepper (optional, to taste) water to cover. Cook on low for 10 hours. Add fresh chopped cilantro before serving. Obviously nothing stops you from making it not in a crock-pot, but in a regular way. In that case, brown the meat first, add water, spices, chickpeas, lentils and tomatoes, cook until chickpeas are soft, then add the veggies during ther last 20 min or so. In original recipe it also asked for fresh fava beans, peas, zucchini, and turnips. I just interpret it as ' chop and throw in all the veggies you've got'

Wasnt very salty, and not to much spices in there, so we thought it would be ok for her. Well, she liked it, but nobody did like her for the rest of the day. Dog lentil farts are horrible! but other than that: lentils are great! No matter if in traditional stuff, or the more "exotic" flavours. damn, im getting hungry qwert

Some people believe in the flat earth. Some believe the earth is only 6000 years old. Some believe carnivore/omnivores SHOULD be vegans. We have a name for them: "Bugfuck Crazy".

My dog eats lots of everything, one of his favourite things is watermelon... (Not good for farts either) but he goes absolutely bananas for meat. I just think it's cruel to feed a dog only veg... since they love it so. Dogs don't give a shit about what Paul Mcartney thinks.

I'm vegetarian and I don't think dogs do well on vegan diets. But, I also wouldn't give my dog a steak. She'd never want to eat dog food again!

Sorry, I actually don't give a shit about dogs, I just needed to put "hypercarnivor" in a post as part of a drinking game. I' sorry for the disruption. Please go on with the bean jokes.
