Straight from a press release sent to climbing mags, retailers and international distributors. Joe Garland (sales manager of Mad Rock who quit 3 weeks ago) is now heading that very same company, which is now renamed "Climb X." Seems like the old fox was laying low and spreading some disinformation of his own around, but he has the backing of the factory, and Young Chu, the former President of Mad Rock, is now out of a job. Don't ask me where I got this, but here is the entire press release:

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Garland Announces New Position with Renamed Climbing Company
Former Mad Rock director to become President of Climb X, Mad Rock's parent company and manufacturer

PORTLAND, OR
February 5, 2010: Joseph Garland, a founding member of Mad Rock Climbing since its inception in 2002 who announced his departure from the company in early January has returned to the industry, and is now working for Mad Rock's parent company and manufacturer. Three of Mad Rock's original partners: Alex Kim, Ken Kim and Joe Garland will continue the business under the new name "Climb X," with Joe Garland being named its new President. Original Mad Rock President and partner Young Chu will retain the Mad Rock name, but is no longer a member of this group. Climb X will assume the former Mad Rock operation, its distributors, most of its sales reps, international staff, warehouse, factory & production, and product development facility, as well as its Chinese and international warehouse facilities. Joe Garland, who was responsible for most of the newer products developed at Mad Rock, will be working out of offices in Portland Oregon, with satellite offices in Munich, Germany and Beijing, China. Joe Garland will be at the ISPO trade show in Munich Germany from February 7-10 2010 in Hall A4, Booth 118 (Everest GMBH booth) for meetings and to answer questions.

NEW ENVIRONMENT
Climb X stock will be available in early March for dealers and distributors from a relocated distribution center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The logistics of relocating the offices and DC are geared for quicker access to the merchandise for North American dealers, and paves the way for a deeper pool of qualified candidates for office staff. The Las Vegas DC has the benefit of being one shipping day closer to eastern customers, while giving identical ship times to all western accounts as Mad Rock's Orange County distribution center. As before, staffing will go to individuals with relevant climbing, outdoor and strong customer service experience; attributes that were hard to come by in the Los Angeles area, with its comparative lack of outdoor activities and quality of life issues that made it difficult to find and retain qualified candidates. Parties interested in Portland positions are encouraged to contact Joe below.

For more information, Joseph Garland can be contacted at JoeGarland@ClimbXgear.com

You sniffed that out early. Thanks for the heads up. Don't know what it's going to mean to us, if anything, though.

I was thinking of the climbing gym in Huntington Beach CA when I first saw this. I can’t see them being the parent company of anything though.

true, madrock's press release reveals the reality/clarifies Mr. Garland's release- that the likely case here is that he is now working with Mad Rock's former manufacturer in China to start up a new shoe company known as Climb X. Although, Mr. Garland's press release insinuates some other things that are apparently not true.

Of course, let's not forget there is already an existing climbing gym known as Climb X, which will, i imagine, create some issues down the line.

Joe is one crazy mofo. Always a step ahead.

One of my favorite Joe creations was an ATC knock off that he called the FUBD (functional utility belay device).

Joe Garland is attempting to partner up with Alex Kim, Mad Rock's former Production Manager at the China Factory, to start Climb X. However, we are still in the process of trying to figure out how he is attempting to do that. Young Chu, sole owner of Mad Rock and majority stake holder of the factory (Mad Rock owns our own factories), has shut down the factory.

It's only an enjoyable read if someone other than a company rep writes it.

Like this entire thing or not, the splitting of the company will be interesting. Someone is going to have to get their head out of the sand and kick it up a notch. There is only so much need for goods in the current market and if spread too thin neither company will succees.
Bring on the new products and the new pricing. We are all looking forward to seeing what you both have to offer us. You're working for our business and brand loyalty only goes so far.

It would be easy to sub-contract out the work. I find the other point very interesting: that it's cheaper to Mfg in Vietnam than China.

Wishing you all success, climbers will benefit from more choice - especially if it has any innovation in it.

Hey while we're at it, let's talk about how Young Chu screwed his former partner Charles Cole, the owner of Five Ten. Great stuff there. And then the whole sordid Evolv story should interest the hoards too. Not that Joe Garland is an angel either...we know he has a solid punch when riled up. Sly
