It was a hiker free soloing up a pinnacle is hiking boots. He lost his balance on top of the pinnacle and fell.

I don't want to disrespect the victim of this tragic accident, but the media mislabeling this as a "climbing" accident will only hurt access in an already touchy place. This was NOT a climber. It was a scrambler, hiker, whatever, but to call it a climbing accident would be like calling a drowning on an inner tube with no life jacket a "whitewater rafting accident."

looks as if most local reports are calling it a "camping" accident, although I couldnt find anything in Louisville's Couier-Journal about it.

Yes, they do, because one of the responders on the scene was Rick Weber, and he made it a point to clarify this. There is a thread at redriverclimbing.com about this accident. Regardless of what you call this guy, it is a sad start for 2010 at the Red, and heartbreaking for his family and friends.
