So, recently, a travel advisory was put out for northern Mexico, with Monterey being specifically mentioned. I guess I'm just wondering from folks who've traveled down there, or are down there, whether there should be any cause for alarm, or change in destinations due to the advisory. I've never been to the area, so I'm pretty clueless, but I was to be safe and not have to worry about getting in the middle of violence and feuds. Thanks!

I've been to Potrero Chico a few times and it was always safe and friendly. Monterrey is a big city, anything can happen, especially if you're looking for trouble (drugs???). I will drive there tomorrow for the first time and anticipate no problems. I plan on keeping my head down when we pass through Texas though. Flying in is even easier, especially if you arrange transport through one of the places folks commonly stay. We arranged a van pick-up for 5 people a couple years ago for $75, a great deal. Have fun.

I drove there last year and had no problems. We crossed the border early and drove straight there, took about 3 hours I recall. If you drive, you sort of skirt Monterrey, you never really go in. If you fly, you're just getting in a cab and going straight to the Potrero. I wouldn't sweat it. if you want to hang out in Monterrey, just keep your wits about you. Laredo and Nuevo Laredo are dumps though, spend as little time there as possible.

I was there in January and ditto to above. Folks were very helpful, Hidalgo itself appears very safe, and you are just passing thru the other towns.

Good replies from everyone who´s posted. Hidalgo and especially Potrero are really peaceful places. Keep your nose clean and enjoy your trip. Ditto on Laredo and Nuevo Laredo too; get in and get out as quick as you can.

I just got back from there a week ago, and four months ago as well. Don’t be parodied, Mexico is not the third world, Uzi wielding drug lord, murder a bunch of schoolgirls for no reason, country most make it out to be. However, last week I did see the Mexican military driveing through town with flat green painted GM pick-up trucks with .50 cal's mounted on the roof, SMG's in their hands, and live FMJ's (or maybe, *gasp*, TMJ's?!) in their clips. I also saw the Mexican SWAT driveing with a nice escort of six cop cars and more guys with more SMG's (actually I think they were SCAR's! (where did they get the money?)).

Full Metal Jackets, I know (they probably were too), but what´s TMJ´s? SubMachineGuns, know that one too, what´s SCAR´s mean? The money comes mostly from budget cuts in education and public health, followed by increased tax revenue and foreign credits.

SCAR's are hands down the the most kick ass rifle on the market. They are the only rifle I know of that can accept different caliber ammunition with a five min modification that can be done in the field. I thought they were only used by Navy SEAL's and other special forces but apparently not.
