The road to the top of Currahee is still closed/ locked at the gate. The hike is about 3 miles.

We were there yesterday also, any idea why it was locked? Office isn't open till Tuesday. Just thought you might know.
Thanks

There is an easy and fast hike from the base of Currahee. The description is on www.seclimbers.org under the climbing section.

regraded...sorry for the mix up...the good news is that the road is drivable to the top and it has been improved dramatically, so much that any car can drive up there...even a VW!

Even so, I highly recommend you take the trail I mentioned earlier in the thread. It is much quicker than driving up and then hiking down. I would personally love to see that road permanently gated in an effort to curb the deplorable vandalism at Currahee.

How can you say that it is quicker to hike up there? I have hiked it a plethora of times (and have ran the road, including the Currahee Challenge) and it has taken me 30 or more minutes with all my gear and friends...while it takes 10 minutes or less to drive up there! True it would "curb the deplorable vandalism" but you can't vandalize the view that many people get from driving up there because they aren't physically fit to hike it! Regardless of your stance...my main point was that the road is open and fixed! Also, I live 5 minutes away from the mountain and I go once a week to climb, the trail needs to be cut and needs some maintenance...so until that is done I will drive my Wrangler up the road!

I don't know if we are talking about the same trail. The trail I am talking about takes about 15-20 minutes. It always takes me about 15 minutes to drive up the road. The put in for the trail is also 10 minutes closer to me, so maybe I am a little biased.

The trail I am talking about is the trail that starts at the old white radio station that the army used!

The Trail that I am talking about starts at that little voting station, which also happens to be white.

Not physically fit to hike it?! Maybe this is the chance to get in shape and to start leading harder stuff there. I always found it to be a great warm-up before climbing. I find this to be one of the easiest approaches in the SE, way less than 30 minutes. Besides, what are you doing at Currahee in the summer!
