Looks like the falcons are back this year and the PA side is temporarily closed to climbing. Just got this through the NJCC Yahoo group...

In reply to:
Dear Climbers,
Below is a message from Allan Ambler of the National Park Service about a temporary climbing closure on Mt. Minsi for Falcon Nesting in the Delaware Water Gap. Please respect this temporary closure and rest assured that we will be able to climb as soon as the falcons have done their business.

Folks,

I am reaching out to the climbing community to ask your help in spreading the word about a temporary climbing closure on Mt. Minsi in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. I found some of your contact information on the Access Fund website. Others I may have worked with in past years. If you know of anyone else that I should contact please let me know.

The closure of Mt. Minsi cliffs is to protect nesting peregrine falcons that are once again attempting to nest on the cliff face.

The closure is effective immediately but I won't be able to get signage up until next week. If you can get the word out sooner that will be appreciated. The length of the closure will depend on whether the falcons nest successfully. In past years we have lifted the closure early when it became obvious that the falcons were not nesting. We will monitor the nesting falcons through the season to determine the nesting status.

Thanks again for your help and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions,

Al

EDIT- Changed the thread title on 7/19/10 to reflect that the closure has been lifted.

Kudos to NPR station WHYY in Philadelphia for mentioning this today. Good luck to those birds. Hopefully in a few years, nesting falcons will be common enough that cliffs won't need to be closed.

Anyone know when the closure will be over. Getting tired of having to pay the toll to come back into PA from the Jersey side. HAHA

I seem to recall it usually being mid-summer, but best bet would be to call and ask if they have any idea when it might be. FWIW I've not yet seen anything about it being lifted.

I went ahead and called, so see my post below.

Nevermind the suggestion I made above to call, as I just did. There's still a pair hanging around the cliffs, so the ban is still very much in effect. They're expecting the falcons to have fledged ~mid-August, so it's going to be a bit yet.

BTW, Alan@DWG/NPS (who passed along the ban announcement to the NJCC, which I quoted in the OP) was quite friendly and helpful.

Good to know they are helpful and friendly. Don't think anyone will be getting up there without seeing a sign. They are posted everywhere.

Just a heads up, the following just came through the NJCC Yahoo Group:

In reply to:
Dear Climbers,
The temporary closure on Mt. Minsi for Falcon Nesting in the Delaware Water Gap has been lifted. Thanks for respecting the temporary closure as the falcons did their thing. Below is the message from the park service.

In reply to:
To all,

Our monitoring of peregrine falcon nesting on Mt. Minsi indicates that the
nesting attempt was not successful.

Effective immediately, Mt. Minsi is reopened to the public.

The peregrine falcon pair remain in the area and expectations are that they
will attempt to nest next season. We anticipate implementing an area
closure again next season to give this species the opportunity to return to
this historic nest site.

Thanks again for your help in spreading the word.

Area closed due to Peregrine Falcon nesting until further notice. We were there on 4/25/11 and the cold cave and trail were plastered with notices. Tammany had no notices to we paid the .75 cents and went climbing.
