Is it generally all right if I go to my local indoor gym to boulder alone?

Helps me concentrate not having five people around. But it's always nice to get beta from other climbers. Either way bouldering alone isn't a bad thing.

Altelis is jealous because in a few years you'll be the hulking mutant wearing a beanie in the corner, too cool to talk to him while he works on his worthless "routes", arms and/or torso strategically bared to show maximum muscle, crushing everyone else's projects while they impotently cry in frustration.

However, to answer the implicit question (to wit: "I am new to climbing and want to know whether people go and boulder at gyms alone"):

Yes, and you can too, but be careful of your fingers and muscles. Bouldering is much, much harder on your body than route climbing.

It's definitely worth trying to find people to climb with you if you are new to it all. Even if it's just bouldering, most people enjoy sharing their triumphs with someone.

Thanks, I'm not too worried about injuries as I have been climbing for a while. I was asking because my partner has gotten busier recently and I was thinking about going out and bouldering alone but wasn't sure if that was an acceptable thing to do.

I wouldn't do it. I always follow the buddy system. What if you get hurt? Or lost?

At my local indoor gym? I think I'll be alright, thanks for the concern.

Look at it like ordering fast-food chicken nugget meals. You order the meal (go to the gym), and you get your food (you can climb alone), and that's great. Sometimes, you get an extra nugget or two (other people are there), and that's just more to enjoy.

Sometimes you get a fried chicken head (little kids or rude climbers) and that sucks.

I believe this just became one of my favorite analogies.

Yes, it is fine.

I travel a lot for work, so I'm often wandering into some random climbing gym -- sometimes I'll find someone to climb with, sometimes I'll just end up bouldering on my own.

yes it's ok. Do not underestimate the missing motivational push from your buddy though. I find it very hard to boulder all alone, but the again, I'm lazy...

How in the world did EVERYBODY miss the sarcasm? For the love of GOD...its one of the advantages of the gym. You can go and boulder and not worry about finding a partner...sheesh Unsure

Recently I've been bouldering alone. I just moved to a new city and don't know that many cats to climb with so I've been going and plugging away on my own. I really enjoy it. you don't have constant beta coming your way it makes it harder to work a problem but once you've gotten it you know it was all because of you

That's why I always bring my gym kit with me - extra water, some sporty bars, garmin GPS, chemical fire starters and a space blanket. Also, I leave a note with my neighbor detailing my planned route and time of return.

Good planning like that could have really prevented some of those gym accidents we have been seeing lately.

Yes, it's fine. The only thing is that you won't have a spotter, which may matter on some higher walls or in gyms with stiffer mats, but just as long as you're aware of it. It can be kinda nice, actually.
