A small band of paint? Tape? If so, what kind?

I use electrical tape. comes in all kinds of colors, small width, clean, and can be marked with a sharpie.

I'm a bit paranoid about putting paint, etc. on the nylon.

I mark all biners. For slings, I mark them on one of the ends sticking out from the bar tacks, with sharpie or nail polish.

Just know what your gear looks like. How many times have you gone climbing with someone who has the exact same draws as you, with the same wear (or no wear) AND you end up using both sets of gear on the same route? Unless you're continually cannibalizing your draws on routes over a period of days, why even mark your draws at all?

Makes it easier when climbing/cleaning routes with people who have similar gear. By the tenth route on the fourth day, things start to get mixy.

I'd rather look at a draw and say "mine" than look at a draw and say "hold on, lemme go into my bag and count my draws; i think two of those are mine" while a friend says "yeah, lemme count too... i don't think i used mine on that route, but for some reason i remember handing you two draws at the last minute, but five people just climbed on them and i was busy with a completely different route so i can't be 100% sure."

Sometimes it's neither you nor your partner who's cleaning the anchors. You leave some gear on a TR for friends while you move on. Your friend knows the red tagged gear is yours, easier for him to collect your gear and get it back to you later.

Whatever... it's not like your friends are going to keep your draws to themselves and you're not going to be able to distinguish them the next time you see each other. Each to their own, but I think taping and marking gear is a waste of time really. I did it once about 15 years ago but never bothered again once it all fell off.

Electrical tape. And for the record, Purple+Orange is mine. My partners took all the cool colors, like Blue/White, and Green/Yellow, and Red is the first choice of 80% of people who bother to mark their gear, for some reason... so I ended up with that toxic purple/orange combo...

And that's why marking them is not a bad thing. Keeps these two from arguing.

Identitape is cool, but it's brittle and can flake off leaving little bits in your pack and on the ground. I use it, but put a clear tape over it (wasting a lot of time in the process I guess).

Most people I know use the 3M colored vinyl tape.

Yeah, that's the thing. If I'm not there, I can tell my buddy to grab my draws before he goes. I don't want to put him (or her) on the spot arguing with someone else whether those draws belong to me or someone else.

And the other way around, I don't want to have someone else's gear that I have to ship back to them because they've already left and won't see them again for a few months.

I just use gym route tape. Lots of different colors and it's durable.

I do agree though that marking your gear isn't important. Out of the 5 or 6 people I climb with on a regular basis most of us don't have markers on our gear and I know exactly who has what... that's just me though.

See, not marking your gear isn't such a taboo practise afterall. Infact, if 80% of people mark their gear it makes it that much easier for me to spot mine.

If you want, i can start another thread discussing the merits of marking gear.

Let's keep this one for those who've already made the decision and are looking for good ways to do it...

Someone told me gaffers (or route) tape with a dab of crazy glue at the ends to prevent it from ever peeling.

Probably just going to do that... i have a few rolls of 1/2" route tape which'll probably be perfect for that.

I didn't say you had to tag your gear. Sure, if your climb with a small group of people and everyone knows their own gear, yeah, why bother? I tend to find myself in a large group from time to time, where gear ends up with different people, and it's just easier to sort and send the gear off to their respective owners if they're tagged. Sure, the gear will probably all find their way back to their owners regardless, but I think tags just make it easier. Like you said though, whatever!

I found duct and gaffers tape gets crusty after a while. Nail polish wasn't visible enough unless you used a lot of it, was harder to put on, took time to dry. Automotive touch-up paint didn't last as long as I expected, took time to dry. Spray probably works much faster but I worry about the residue as it wears off onto the rope. Before the identitape, I used vinyl colored tape, that seems to have worked the best.

I don't tag soft goods, figure they're mostly going to stick around with the biners, but my guidebooks have tags on the cover.

I do the skinny strips of duct tape. I did nail polish for a while, but it all chips off wicked fast. I'm pink and black!

Does electrical tape work better? The DT doesn't fall off a lot, but it would be nice to get a little more longevity out of my tape sessions.

From my experience, electrical tape's the first one to fall off. Then the duct tape.

I'm going to try nail polish mixed with a little bit of extra strength glue.

Can't say, haven't tried nail polish though there's certainly enough in my house to paint my rack 5 times over.

I use these because they're easy.
