Did you read the note about the landowner request on the Farley info page?

In reply to:
The climbing at Farley Ledge is all on private land. The landowners (not the local climbers) have requested that climbers do not publish information on the routes at Farley. The Western Mass Climbers Coalition is trying to help assure that the landowner's wishes are respected, and users are requested NOT to post public route information.
Since Farley is all on private land, the owners have the ability to take access away at any time if they feel that overcrowding is an issue. They are sensitive to this overcrowding and are watching it.

In order to protect the access that we do have at Farley, we are taking down route information in order to respect the landowner's wishes.

Seems like respecting the request of a private landowner in order to preserve climbing access is more important than you being able to record your climbs on this website.

Haha... Thank god ( the rock god) every route in the world isn't listed on rc.com. Then all the gym rats would know about the "secret" spots!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...

What is this the US Government. You guys are acting like "Eye Opener" is Top Secret.

Information sharers will always win.

As a frequent climber at Farley and one who has personally put a lot of time and money into access and maintenance of that crag, I think you are way out of line.

Please do some research to get a better understanding of the access issues concerning Farley and the surrounding area. While Farley is no longer a "secret" crag, access is tentative. Please respect the requests of the landowners and those of the community who put the time, effort, and cash down to get you access there in the first place.

If it's really for your own personal records, and not to spray about doing Eye Opener, why not keep a private journal?

yeah.... logging of your ascents on a public forum for personal records... i get it....

you can get cooler graphs if you setup your own excel sheet, and it's even easier to do data entry!

oh that and, when the routes were actually up on rc.knob, they were all mis-named, mis-graded, un-editable, and represented less than 5% of the climbing there, not a perfect resource for logging your sends, brah.

You guys are right, respecting the land owners requests are important too. I apologize for my rant.

Since I posted this discussion I have started a journal for my own climbs and goals. No it doesn't have flowers. I guess I misunderstood the whole point of the climbing log, which I thought was to be able to keep track of your own sends while enabling you to share them with others.

After I thought about this more, I think a nice compromise is the ability to record private climbing log entries against routes that are not in the database. This will probably never happen unless rc.com can find a way to make money off it.

I agree that places like Farley should be locked.

What else do you want from me? I don't agree with your assessment of me as narcistic, a douche, self centered. By comparing me to a boltcutter, someone who lives at home in my parents basement, or someone who leave shit all over the cliff, just goes to show that you don't know me at all. I am none of these things.

Just in case you got the wrong impression from me, I think none of those things about you. I think you have some good ideas, and some not-so-good. Just like the rest of us. You'd have fared better by not digging your heels in when confronted by just how bad your not-so-good idea was (publicly arguing against landowner wishes by requesting the publicizing of routes at Farley).

Anyway, sorry the tone got nasty. Fact is, you learned something, which puts you head and shoulders above many of the posters here on rc.com.

Cheers,

GO

Hi,
Just read this thread....I respectfully agree and disagree - to a point on this area.

Yes - sadly - I agree that IF access info was posted then some Yahoo's prob would go access the site w/o calling the land owner's and politely requesting permission to climb there, etc - and if declined - be polite and respectfully accept that declination - and not be rude to them, etc. That's their right as the land owners.

My GF resides in Western, MA and we are trying to find some nice places near her so she can gain some much needed experience, etc. I am from NY area and all m climbing has been to the Gunks and ADK's mainly - so climbing in Western, MA is new to me/us and have been trying to find some nice places where she can get on the rock and get some much-needed experience and skills.

However, it would be nice to know what IS there for routes - albeit perhaps not posting any location specifics or access info in detail.

Just my $.02....doesn't men crap I know....certainly wouldn't want to damage or jeopardize what gains have been made by the climbing club as well...
