I am coming in this Saturday night, May 1st around 3:00 am and am looking for somewhere to pitch a tent for the night. I have called every camp site up there and they all say that they won't let us in that late, no matter what I pay. Any ideas?

Well you may just want to sleep in your car at the Ingles grocery store. I take it you already understand the no camping policy at the Rumbling Bald parking area so this may be your best bet. ciao Santana

you could also head into Pisgah National forest ~ 1.5 hrs west on 64 of the bald and crash there. Or get a cheap motel. Depends were you are coming from really.

You can probably sleep in the visitor center parking lot if you sleep in your car. I know a couple of folks that have slept in their vehicle there without getting hassled. I've rolled into The Hitching Post pretty late, but prolly not 3 a.m. We just set up a tent and dealt with the late arrival the next day. I'd spoken to the folks that owned the campground -- we'd stayed there several times previously -- and they were expecting us. We simply got a later start than expected. Everything was cool. If you're going to come to the Bald frequently, it might behoove you to build a relationship with a campground owner.

I appreciate all of the information guys. We (4 of us) are coming from Charleston, I would rather not sleep in the car if at all possible, but can swing it if absolutely needed. I may try with the hitching post and see what they say. Thanks guys!

You can camp in the parking lot of the Coffee Crumbles. It is completely legit and they have great breakfast and coffee when you wake up. It is in Chimney Rock and not far from the rock. There are a few grassy spots there I believe, but we slept in the car when we did it.
